temperature sensor on head will cause the relay to click on and off like that (I hear never experienced). Maybe check it is connected I believe the head has two sensors one for gauge one for glow plugs.

I've passed that along. Hopefully that's it, although the temp gauge is working and is on the same plug.

not on the same plug should be two different sensors (I suspect the one did not get plugged in)???

........As Mararmeisto says.... either the circuit board. Or the 2 prong plug for the water coolant temp (located near the front of your engine). There is also a single prong plug there which merely gives your dashboard guage the info, BUT it is the 2 prong plug that talks to the glow plugs. In winter, that 2 prong plug dead will prevent you starting. In summer you will start with a couple extra seconds of cranking, and extra black smoke ... but menatime you are putting extra strain your entire starting and electrical system so do your troubleshooting now.....

Never under-estimate the value of a manual system. My ECU on the Hilux was causing glow plug failure so I put in a manual glow plug relay system and it is great. If it's running rough on startup, give it another 5-10 seconds and it purrs like the ugly kitten it is.

Sure but no head gasket should cost that much, just sayin'. But he's a hero all right. 2 days in a gas station parking lot, in above 30 heat and he's on the road again. Apparently lots of old timers came along to see what he was doing and were pretty blown away, as am I. How many people swap head gaskets on the side of the road on a holiday?

Lordco should have supplied you a head gasket for under 80.00. The part # is the same for the early Rangers, Dodge Ram 50 pickups. (84-86?) I cant believe those scheisters do this to people when the word "Delica" is mentioned.

Sadly, the Dodge was the gasket that was actually used. It's possible that they charged heavily for overnight service. I'm tempted to inquire what the list price for that gasket is supposed to be, but what's the point; the kids got on the road after a major breakdown in a small town after two days! Even if they could find a mechanic to do the work for them in that town (doubtful) the going rate is $3,000.00! Even with having to buy a torque wrench, an allen socket, oil and coolant, the bill was less than $300.00.

I know it's a big job, but the prices shops charge for head gasket replacement is usury, IMO. If a 23-year-old, non-mechanic can replace a head gasket in a Mohawk gas station parking lot in two days, working only in the cool of the morning each day, I don't see how the going price is justified in a well-equipped shop.
