Re: L300 with engine knock
Maybe if the crank shaft pulley bolt is loose or broken? If it's broken you have a serious problem though.

Re: L300 with engine knock
I've got 3 out back that were knocking. Connecting rod bearings shot, but none were due to any fault of the engines. All were run out of oil. One had the oil filter come loose, and the other was starved for oil when it experienced engine oil polymerization (the oil turned to jello), a problem that can occur when using wvo. And the third lost all its oil due to a bad turbo seal. Unfortunately for the owners, by the time the oil light came on, it was too late. So I wouldn't say it's common, but it does happen, but it's not the engines fault.

Re: L300 with engine knock
don't buy it if its' knocking... trust me, i know a bit now about jello oil syndrome.
i replaced my engine in november, and it wasn't a fun experience $$$$(except meeting the guys at CCA... ;) ).

Re: L300 with engine knock
I know that the engine will need a rebuild/replace but can get it for dirt cheap and work on things and source parts from there.
Thanks for the info

Re: L300 with engine knock
So to replace con rod bearings the engine would neen to be pulled out correct? Then I guess a complete rebuild?
Thanks

Re: L300 with engine knock
depends on why it is knocking....if it lost oil pressure there could be more throughout
To fix it properly you should pull the motor down and figure out why it is knocking (I had a friend pull the pan on the small block chev, emery cloth the crank, jam an over size bearing in, and race the motor for 4 more years till it dropped a valve at 8,500rpm)

Re: L300 with engine knock
You can pull the oil pan off without removing or lifting the engine if you want to take a look at the connecting rod bearings. The engine I have that was run out of oil due to a loose filter was in an l300 I bought with the engine knocking. I took a chance and polished the crank with emery cloth and put in new bearings. It didn't last long for me, I only got 600km before it started knocking again. I would check with RSI and Maxium Overdrive (I think). They had brand new complete engines or long blocks available at very affordable prices. There wasn't a lot of difference in the price of a used engine, or the brand new ones.It not even worth me rebuilding the old engine for the price of a new one, and I think there is no core charge on a new one, so you get to keep your old one and sell off parts (or save them)

Re: L300 with engine knock
I'm thinking the new engine is the best way to go, they come complete with turbo, injection pump, alt, for the extra price you get rid of alot of potential headaches! But that will be a year away at least, for now I'll be in the hunt for a set of rear seats and a back door panel as they are missing.......oh and a left corner panel on the bumper and thats it!
