Hello Delica peeps,
I've been recently introduced to the Delica, and since my friend has put these on my radar... I can't see NOT owning one. Been enjoying the discussions here!
The challenge: I live in California, so not many options.
I've been exploring all of the possibilities with the brilliant mods that you guys have been doing.
The current thought/angle: I've lined up a U.S. version (gas/2wd/low roof), and I'm wondering what it will take to get the body parts/bull guard?to turn it into a worthy ride. As in get the outside looking right and functional, then consider options to turn it into a diesel... maybe 4x4.
But for now a sort of 2WD "Pre-Runner" with decent tires and lift.
I'm open to thoughts and ideas from the wise congregation here!

Hi Fret, welcome to Delica Canada
Just a thought: There are going to be 25 year old Delica Starwagons out there ('87 models) ~ why not snag one of them to go with your Mitsu Vanwagon?
Falco.

..check with CC autos. Glen was in the process of completing a LH 4X4 conversion on a L200 for a US customer that bailed. Maybe he's still game to finish that project. Sounded $$$$

Re: New Delica addict...
Thanks for the suggestions. So much to consider right now - especially since I haven't actually thrown down the cash on this VanWagon yet.
My hesitation? A few of them...
Funds being limited I will have to get rid of my current ride - an uber-reliable, turn key, parts are a dime a dozen 2005 Scion XB - and trade it for a funky, quirky, cool car that at some point will likely leave me stranded. After 15-20 years of turn-key cars I'll probably have to awaken the tinkerer/mechanic that I used to be. I DO have a masters degree in MacGuyver studies though...
Falco, Re the upcoming 25 year Delicas, would this have to go through a... registered importer, and if so are there a lot of fees and pricey modifications involved to make it USA legal?
One question I have re the VanWagon - are they somewhat flimsy (front ends) and would they not make a good basis for a heavier duty rig?
Bionic, that LH 4x4 conversion would probably be out of my $$ range... though I could use some suggestions for a poor man's version (see below).
Another angle I'm exploring... I have a line on a clean body VanWagon (blown engine) for super dirt cheap... like $3-$400. Turbo Diesel Dodge D50s (early American L200?) are also pretty dirt cheap.
What's to say that I couldn't plop the van body onto the D50 chassis? It seems the California rules are much less strict on a body change - vs doing an engine swap. As I understand it, in California, taking an emission controlled vehicle (any gas car) and changing to a non-emission controlled (diesel) engine is a complete non-starter... ain't gonna happen.
I could go 4x4 but I don't necessarily care... I'd probably never use it. never needed it in the Tacoma I had for 10 years.
I realize with this hypothetical VanWagon/D50 conversion there would be wheelbase differences, cutting and welding, brackets/body mounts to make etc. What would be important to me is that the engine/front wheel location are where they need to be. I can deal with moving leaf spring mounts/shortening frames or drive shafts.
Any thoughts on this?
Bernie
