Super-Select problems

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Super-Select problems

Post by monnomania »

A while ago I the ‘front’ green super-select lights started to blink so I changed the 4WD vacuum solenoid. Problem resolved.

A couple of months later (about two weeks ago) the yellow ‘CD’ light started flashing, so with great luck I was able to source and replace the 4wd front axle sensor. Problem NOT solved.

The yellow CD light continued to flash; so I went to a local Mitsu dealer and a brace of mechanics had a bunch of ideas but couldn’t do much...

How can I get this transmission working? Any suggestions?

NOW:
1. The yellow CD light does not flash
2. The 4WD (4H at least) works
3. When the transfer lever is placed into 4H the ‘front’ green lights do NOT illuminate
4. When the transfer lever is 4HLc the ‘front’ green lights AND yellow CD light ILLUMINATE. SOMETIMES it is possible to shift from 2H to 4HLc directly without shifting the transmission into neutral. I do not believe the CD locks up at any time.
5. I cannot shift transfer case into 4LLc at all
6. It seems when the transmission is cold the ‘rear’ green SS lights do NOT illuminate, sometimes flicker on rough roads and when this flickering is going on, a right curving turn stops the flickering to a steady illumination. It seems that after a while the ‘rear’ lights illuminate – until the next time they don’t

So the jokers at the dealership suggest that there are 5 sensors in the Super-select transmission and that there is another sensor which is causing a disturbance (but refused to do anything about it for me). Of course all their fiddling was probably the reason the sensor/transmission is pooched. They believe that it is this one (shown as E in illustration):

if you put a piece of cardboard over the lights and simply forget about them for the time being, can you answer the following:

does the 4wd system work in all the selection gears:

4H - AWD
4HLc - 4x4 high range
4HLLc - 4x4 low range

You can test these on a hoist at a shop.

If the superselect works in all the modes, then take a look behind your dash console and clean the contacts.

Hola jfarsang

4H-yes
4HLc-don't think so, all wheels still turning..."SOMETIMES it is possible to shift from 2H to 4HLc directly without shifting the transmission into neutral" suggests no cd lock
4LLc-can't get the shifter into position

Sorry, one addendum to the original post: the sensor pictured is shown as "E" in illustration

did they check to see if the linkage is binding at the shifter and on the transfercase if the shifter bushings are worn?

not being able to physically put the shifter in 4HLLc (4 low range) while in neutral (can't do it in gear) is an indication of the above

Jfarsang, are you saying that the transmission needs to be dropped to change the bushings in the transfer case shifter? ouch

hold on, I don't understand.

what linkages and how? I should have been clear that I have a L400, auto. There are no linkages I can see between the transmission lever (PRND21) and the floor mounted transfer case shift lever. The Transfer case shifter is direct into the transfer case housing.

what am I missing?

Still looking for some description of what to check for, how to resolve 'check the linkage'.

anyone?

sorry I thought I responded (smacks head)

I was referring to the shift linkage under the shift plate in the transfer case.
