Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Metallic Buzzing

Post by nxski »

I'm getting a metallic buzzing sound around 1000rpm. I'm thinking the exhaust has come loose again (it does this once in a while but I've never had a buzzing before). The sound becomes less noticeable when the engine warms up and unless wind noise etc is stopping me from hearing it, it only happens at exactly 1000rpm. Resonant frequency perhaps?

Is is definitely coming from the exhaust area. I thought it might be the transmIssion because I got a grinding noise when putting it in gear but now I get the noise at 1000rpm even if I'm just in park and revving it. I'll try to put up a video later if I find some wifi and have enough time.

Do you have any shackles hanging off your wagon? I have these shackles and when I put them on I wrapped them in duct tape so they wouldn't rattle. A year and a half later I started getting a deep rattle/knock, thought it might be my suspension ~ turned out that the duct tape had worn off of the shackles that I'd completely forgotten about.

Another time a friend had got a rattle in his mini truck, turned out to be a rusted out cross member.

Might be nothing, might be important ~ have you had a crawl around underneath to see? Crab onto things and shake them, see what moves and what does not?

I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Tomorrow I'll be arriving at a campsite in Cape Breton and I'll look into it further then. I do have some shackles but not in the area the sound seems to be coming from, nor do I think they would make this type of sound (then again, sounds can be misleading).

OK I think I know what it is, it took the video to remind me.... I think it is the heat shield above your muffler. Mine had popped out of place and I had to move it around. To tell you the truth I got tired of messing with it over a few months and pulled it out haha. I know there may be people who post not to but for me I'm ok with what ever.

Aha! I should have thought of that since I now remember that the heat shield on my civic used to make a similar noise. I also cut off the back of the heat shield when I put in the side exhaust to make room for my oil bypass system so maybe that is causing it to come loose too. I'll try to get under the van as soon as I reach a hood spot and the rain stops.

I'm assuming you have already checked along the entire exhaust system from the engine to the tail pipe for anything is loose and are asking this question because there is no evident object causing the buzzing?

if I made a thread about every new sound on my Delica, this forum would have been flooded with 'new sound... what is it'...

You would be correct. I have looked under than van and nothing appears to be out of the ordinary. Short of tightening every bolt in sight I figured I'd post a question and video.

Set your throttle until you hear the noise crawl underneath then tape the muffler with a hammer and see if the sounds changes

Good idea! That's a nice and easy way to pin point the sound. Thanks!

I seem to recall you installed a nice stereo system in your van. I would suggest you start to use it to its full potential. I also suggest you rip out all aftermarket guages as it seems to have greatly reduced your enjoyment of this trip. now by doing this, you can neither hear or see any faults with the van.

now that we have covered those sensory organs, if by some chance if you start to feel any vibrations along the way, i suggest you drop your tire pressure by at least 10psi, now you have eliminated the sense of touch. get a few air fresheners and now we have coverd the sense of smell. now unless you are starting to check your oil by taste i think we can leave that sense alone.

now enjoy your trip.
Cheers,
Reza

Haha thanks rezdiver. I'll crank the stereo and lower the psi, I no longer have a pyro so no worries there. :-D

Regardless of these problems I'm having a blast. I suppose Delica.ca only hears about the negative though.
