A long time ago in a land far far away, someone posted info about a portable cooler/freezer that was available (jesse??). They were for sale in Victoria, and I think they were around $900.

I thought we saved the link, but apparently deleted it at some point. Long story short, Brian was telling my folks about it, and they want to know the details, and now I can't find it.

Anyone have a clue what I'm rambling about> HELP!!!!

I used something similar to the fridge in that link on a trip in Australia - when it was pretty hot. Good piece of kit for sure.

I bought a cooler at CDN Tire a few years back.

Looks like a typical cooler, but can stand upright too. Plugs into cigarette lighter or 110V (with included transformer). Inverting the plug-in allows it to keep food warm also.

Worked great on our trips to Mexico in our previous van.

Hi Kathy, I consider you guys the king and queen of what to use for expeditions (we finally got a shower unit similar to yours).

I dont recall who that posting was, but various local guys have bought them. Engel and similar, Prices range from 400 to 800.

Proper fridges (ie with a proper thermostat so that once fridge is cold it barely uses any electricity, but look like a regular cheapo cooler), so you can leave it on even when parked.

There was one local guy who bought a genuine engel (off ebay), maybe 3 or 4 years ago, then after a long dusty trip, the dust killed the motor. Otherwise, havent heard of problems.

Delicat recently got one, off ebay, not an Engel, but an imitation, for about 400. He used his full time on our group trip to Arizona, ran off his "house battery" which is installed separately from the starting battery (house possibly a 27 series deep cycle). The digital display shows the internal temp without lifting the lid, I recall seeing a 2 degrees display on it one morning. Kept his kids food cool.

Remember anything 12 volt is inefficient, and only cools about 20 degrees F below ambient outside air temp. So, while I LOVE my Cdn tire Koala or MobilCool, (50 to 70 $C) it is 12 volt, and needed ice to supplement its job during our Arizona trek. So, a bag of ice at $1.19 every 2 days, still cheaper than a Engel.

Do NOT use your cigarette lighter to power a 12 volt plug for this much work, you will fry the wiring in your delica, a cigarette lighter is only meant for 15 seconds of use. You must properly install a marine style 12 volt outlet, with a proper fuse, close to the battery. My 12 volt cooler will kill even my huge 31series deep cycle battery dead in 3 hours (so dead the battery might not take a jump start, ahhh the sad voice of experience speaks, grasshopper).

My next fridge for summer use is a propane AC/DC used fridge, like from a little RV, carry on my rear hitch basket, so that when we are parked for the weekend camping, I can just run it off a 20 pound propane bottle.

For winter use, I will just keep using my cheapo 12 v cooler, as I start with the milk and second nights meal pre-frozen (to keep the fridge cold when I am not driving)... in fact, one time we winter camped, got a sudden -15 C cold snap, and the only drinking water that did not freeze was the bottle in my 12 v fridge.

If this weather doesn't warm up we won't need a fridge. I'm not planning to hook my 3 way fridge up till July.

Incidentally I increased the wire size to my cigarette lighter with a separate fuse and dash switch straight off the battery.

Surprisingly the 3 way fridge takes very little 12V power (amperage) once cooled down. Run it on 120 V before leaving home, 12V on the trip and propane while camped. Don't forget to vent the propane exhaust out a window.

I custom cut a light plywood section to fit into my side window, holed to fit the electrical conduit vent pipe.

I used an extreme 5 day cooler rated to keep ice for 5 ( more like 3.5 ) days good enough and for travelling in BC way cheaper. But this looks very cool
