Very encouraging and brave you are ! yes I may have to gather up all my gus to do it with my mechanic friend as I am short of $ . I do not have stalling since last time so may be able to do it later. I believe advancing the IP will help the fuel economy but engine a bit nosier.

Also don't assume the the Pajero pump is the same as it is not (often mooted on fleabay) and even some of the Delica's ones don't interchange (ensure same part number on the pump itself)
So the part no. of the main seal is on the pump? And where is it ? Picture will be great.
It's on the main shaft. $17-20 depending on what the dealer charges. They all stock them. Your preference of where to buy although certain dealers will naturally chime in here as usual.
I realize that when buying a kit off ebay things might not fit correctly, but it worked out fine in the end and I was left with a bunch of extra seals etc. The only nervous moments were pulling the gear off the pump, and pulling the old seal. though the shaft is very hard the last thing you want to do is put a scratch in it where the seal sits. My wife just returned from a 1000km trip and raved about how much better the van pulled up hills. May have to leave the timing as is.....
Thanks Jesse for the big picture of the fuel pump main shaft and seal.
Thanks Roadie for your reply as well. Nice to hear that your L400 runs a lot better and your wife loves it more now.
I guess it shouldn't be a problem getting the right main seal as it is a popular item . Too bad the no. is on the gear which cannot be seen until its all taken apart..

".................... and yes it can leak fuel into the sump but thats usually only when its really severe case after its been left for ages, when the pump is removed and the drive cog taken off you may see the front of the pump casing all nice and clean, this is where its been washed clean by leaking fuel.
Out of the 140+ seals i have changed i have only come across this 35 times or so, but best advice is after the sela is changed change your engine oil and filter "

"No doubt if I end up having to go to a diesel fuel injection specialist (as the local mob could easily mess it up) they will tell me its not worth doing unless they overhaul the whole pump and there may be some truth in that I suppose. As this is a low mileage car could it be that the seals on this may have become hardened due more to under-use than the effects of low sulphur diesel? Just guessing here but the front seal fix which works for most quite possibly might not work in this case meaning that I could end up having to do the job twice? "

"I have never been called back to a seal change, if you fit the right seal, IE one thats tollerant to low sulphur it should then last the life of the vehicle, Shoguns over here that where meant for sale in this country with out diesel have seals that last sometimes 200k plus miles, one i changed was on 268k!!! and this is after the diesel changine again to ultra low sulphur over the last 10 years or so, oh and also that old chesnut about the pump needing a rebuild is just that, if your Delica starts from cold ok, and once the stalling issue has been and gone it then runs ok all day too then i doubt there is anything wrong with the pump that a rebuild will fix, change the seal for a Genuine Zexel seal and relax...
If you cant get hold of them pm me and il send you one, they cost me £1.50 a go so it will be that plus postage "

What's your point other than repeating yourself.
I thought OP has had a hard time to get the part at best price.
So I showed him shop direction to UK site.
You remind people Rising Sun Auto Import has all related parts in stock.
Of course I believe Amazing auto, maxoverdrive and RMI has them as well.
You don’t need to shop overseas when they are available here.
After my first post I am keeping track on my van's behaviour to confirm whether it has the fuel pump main seal problem. I have to say that it isn't ,at least not now. No more stalling ,no black smoke ,no symtomps like I read about this fault. I just make sure to run the engine a few minutes ( less than 5 ,depends on the cold weather) otherwise it will stall and I can tell before it happens as it didn't run smooth.
