I removed my rear evaporator (I called it a condenser - but the guys at the a/c shop corrected me). My system kept leaking out the gas I put in.
I could see a bit of oil collecting around the two fittings where they connected to the aluminum block of the evaporator. I removed it and the evaporator looks like new. I took it in to have it tested, which they can't do until after the weekend.
I am hoping it is just the o-rings that need replacing.
I have been reading on the UK site and several people have had issues with the aluminum block where the a/c hoses connect (circled in red) at the evaporator cracking and leaking. They indicate welding it has had about 60:40 result of success.

Does anyone have the spec capacity for oil volume for an A/C system on a 97 L400? It has front and rear A/C.
I found the specs for the gas volume (955 grams) by searching but can't seem to find the oil volume.

I believe your system should already have oil in it, most of which will be in the compressor. When I had mine recharged I asked for some oil to be added, the tech added an oz and warned against adding to much. Can cause lots of issues. Thats my understanding anyways.

Once I fix the leak, the system will be evacuated and recharged. Does the evacuation remove the oil as well?
If not then I wont have to worry about it. Maybe just add a little to replace what's leaked out.

The vacuum will cause the water to boil off and exit as vapour, the oil won't evaporate under vacuum. As its being vacuumed you can add some oil to the low pressure side I believe, the vacuum will pull it through. Not 100% sure if oil was added to the low pressure side or high pressure side. Are you doing the recharge and vacuum yourself?

No, I am getting a shop to do the vacuuming and recharge once I repair the system. They will know how to add a bit of oil. I imagine very little was lost in the leak so it won't need much at all - if any.

Just called the rad shop and my evaporator isn't leaking...whew!
Two thumbs up to the guys at Surrey Radiator at 64/King George. Great to deal with and friendly service. They were swamped and explained it would be a couple of days before they could get to it. They performed as promised. I'd go back there.
I need 2 new o-rings to replace the ones where the A/C lines connect to the evaporator. I'm pretty sure that's where my leak is. They guys at the rad shop found the smaller of the 2 but say the larger one is an odd size which they couldn't match.
Anyone have any suggestions where to begin looking? I'll try Lordco and the regular places but in case they don't I don't know where else to look.
