RichD that is your most insightful post since you joined up.
Well written.
David. Hopefully your departure (and the others) strikes a chord with the site owners.

I ran a paintball forum back in the day, same things happened.
Problem was, I owned it, paid for it but others wanted it
done differently. It was mine.
It's something about the internet that makes people more likely
to butt heads than if they were all present in person.
It would be different if there was a membership charge. $$$
Respectfully I have to disagree with you buddy. I've been using social communications tools like this one since the mid-80s, long before the web - since I was a child in fact. I've actively participated in countless BBS's, forums, guilds, and they all run on a social contract, one in which the community is the owner of the forum and the host or webmaster provides shelter and support. (and for the record that social contract is not a monetary transaction as you suggest) Whenever the leadership steps up and tries to assert unilateral control the social contract is broken and the community fragments and breaks down. I've seen it many times and its always ugly. That is what is happening here at delica.ca.
You are wrong to assume that this is just keyboard warriors having it out. Factually, we have hashed this out in person as well. For those of us in the Lower Mainland and environs this site is a companion to a real circle of friends and a community that was thriving. What goes on here on delica.ca goes on in emails and phone calls and texts and informal meets every day - not meets in parking lots but actual friends meeting in backyards and shops and enjoying meals and weekend trips together. Delica.ca used to be the hub of our community and we've started replacing that with other fragmented ad hoc medium. Certain people have been completely isolated because of this conflict, people who used to be regular features of our social scene. You can see the tension and the lines drawn between these people in the forum threads.
What you are watching is not a forum that is struggling because of too many differing opinions. That is a very shallow summation of what is going on. What you are watching is a community in the throes of falling apart. Like a family losing its home, this is not a pretty site.
Well said D-Man

The posts of the more knowledgeable members of this forum (whether directly, or indirectly addressed to my concerns) have been absolutely invaluable as a newer Delica owner. This is the first time I have been a part of a vehicle related community of this type, and it's been amazingly helpful to say the least. I've learned so much from you guys in the last year. I hate to see the community falling apart, and these most valuable and helpful members get frustrated and leave. I just want to say thanks to all of you before any other members bail out or (potentially) have their accounts disabled.
Let's bring back the community, and the smiles to delica.ca

You can't be "another Green 1" - there can be only one!

This forum was my introduction web forum communication, a way to learn and share info about my cool bus, and a way to meet new friends in the real world who share my interest in delicas - friends from as far away as Australia. The current, and sadly protracted issues have sullied things terribly. I'm still around too and haven't totally given up hope that things can be sorted out, but I have lost heaps of interest in it and what's left is fading fast. What a loss... :(

Arguably the most unique Delica (and one of the first to be imported into Canada) and it's creator is leaving this site.
Frustration has limits and David reached his.
On a positive note.
Can't wait for spring-trails with the delica people including David

That was a well written post.
I have to agree with what you wrote. I think in my mind I was focusing more on the
technical and not so much the damage to the relationships. I also didn't realize that
'certain individual' is being a prick in real life and pretty much stalking people either.
Im not going to delete my post, but leave it up so people realize what's
being talked about.
Thanks

Honestly, for the past couple weeks I just blocked or muted one certain member, and although I do admit to probably missing out on some entertainment, it has enhanced my forum lurking experience ten fold.
Then I checked in Sunday night forgetting to log in first and wow, what a bloody mess again heading the active topics.. I think this would be solved by banning him from posting and let the rest of the site go on normally. But instead members and other dealers get attacked, he goes on getting warnings I would assume, and for some reason is still able to post..

It's funny and kind of sad to read the goings on here. I run a forum with almost 9000 members and there is none of this banter there. The reason is easy. I have made it very clear that everone is allowed an opinion, but as soon as someone gets personal, they're gone. In the 8 years that I've run it, I've only had trouble with two people.
To the moderstors, please remeber this 'vehicle' has many wheels, and don't let the squeeky one get all the grease. The other wheels won't (normally) complain, they'll just 'fall off'' one at a time. You're lucky enough to have someone like DJJACK complain, at least you know why he's gone. Most just quitely go away and you're just left wondering why.
But thats just me speaking my mind.

Too true, the quiet majority who leave or become non-users due to unsavory interactions would rather just move on than to get involved. I have seen it before as well.

If there is truly one person that is to blame for most of the BS that I have been reading on this forum for the past 12 months then just delete him. Whether they are right or wrong it doesn't matter, they are obviously making things difficult for some of the most valuable members on this forum.
I must admit I have walked away from any interest in this forum over the past 6 months because I was tired of the crap I was reading (I know I don't have to read it, but I also don't have to look at a car crash as I drive by either and I do). Just recently I have come back and started to contribute a little here and there...testing the waters. It was maybe starting to look better and then bang, here we freakin' go again on this apparently never ending topic. I do enjoy being part of this community and want to continue, but it is hard when every few days the problem person is posting something that eggs on a member to say things that they either don't totally mean out pure frustration or they do mean but is overall harmful to the health of the forum.
Please just DELETE the problem person. Your lives as moderators will be some much easier - even if you feel like the wrong side has won the battle.
Please hit the delete key on this issue once and for all.
Please!

I could not agree more!!!
I've been using the "Ignore" functionality on a particular Rising member for the past few months now - however when we start losing key contributing members for the sake of one member that I and others Ignore, then just do us all a favour and DELETE the problem person.

Hey
Green 2.0
This one's for you my brother from the archives.
Sure you two aren't long lost brothers? Word for word, pound for pound you two pack similar punches.

This is not the friendly community it once was, when I started on here everyone was friendly and statements were taken based on the evidence posted within, now "I've been working on diesel engines for __ years" carries more weight on engine operations than mountains of printed material, tons of anecdotal evidence, common sense, and the laws of physics. "because I said so" carries more weight of points of law than government forms, fact sheets and laws. And I've learned that the posted rules of this site only apply to those who must abide by them, and not to those who write them.
I leave it to the "community" to decide.
