Nope, that wasn't it. Still got a rattle.

But now at least we know it's not the rock in the bull bars!

Okay, the problem with the rattle under the dash is it's actually several rattles. That's why it's hard to tell where it's coming from.

I tracked down another one, so I'm posting it here:

1) open the glove box
2) using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the 5 screws around the glove box
3) remove the glove box
4) reach in with your hand and feel just above the glove box: there's a relay there, the turn-signal relay. Is it loose?
5) tighten the mounting screw that secures the turn-signal relay
6) put everything back together
7) go for a drive and curse that it was not the only rattle under the dash :)

Nope, the rock in the bull bars wasn't it. The rattle came back with a vengeance when the temperature dropped (or when the leaves started falling). I thin there's actually several rattles, which is why it's hard to find. That and it only happens when the vehicle is moving, so it's kind of hard to stick your head under the dash and listen.

Mine kicks in at 40kph. It's amazing how loud it is! I turn up the stereo, but then all I hear is my music with a loud rattle all over it.

The continuing stoooory....

Determined to locate the rattle under the dash, I equipped myself with a digital recorder, the kind you use as a dictation machine. I poked it around while I was driving over 40k (whoops, stay in the lane!) and narrated where each sample was taken.

The noise is the loudest near my left foot.

I think my next move is to take apart the air box for the heater core, and see if something's gotten sucked in there.

I had a passenger the other day say she thinks it's under the floor. I took the brush pan off and looked around, but couldn't see anything suspicious. While I was in there, I zip-tied any wires and hoses that might rattle, but no change.

Oh, and I've observed that when it's rainy, the noise is quieter, and occurs at slightly higher speed. It's as if what's rattling gets wet, and it's mass increases.
