NO, THAT IS NOT A PICTURE OF MY VALVES!!!

but since adding an oil catch can to avoid eating oil through the intake, I've been curious about the condition of my valves.

has anyone taken apart their engine far enough to have any input?

:o Wow!

All-righty-then! That would be one demonstrative reason to install an oil catch can - like I'm going to be doing once the parts arrive.

The above picture looks like oil crud, but probably a lot of dirt and grime also from no air filter I would say.

I don't think you'll see a difference unless you have cleaned that area before installing your catch can, or alternatively install a catch can with a brand new head, if you pull off your intake manifold you'll be able to get the same view as above.

Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't an oil catch can normally take the oil that would be going to the intake? And isn't this oil normally vapour that is burned? Or, is it depositing on the intake side of the valves at high operating tempuratures? I would have thought (on an L400 at least) with an intercooler you would get fairly "clean" oil vapour entering the combustion chamber...

Only if an intercoller works as an oil catch can. 8-)

Heh, it looks like it does with the oil it sometimes collects! Of course, the air filter bay does the same thing...

1994-1995 l400 known for having excessive oil making its way through the intake system......... put an oil catch can on the list of REALLY REALLY REALLY should do list for 94-95. Ultimitely should not cause grief, but does burn oil and will coat your intake system: pipes, manifold, intercooler......... spent about and hour cleaning the sh&t out of my intake manifold; sorry, did not take pictures.........
