so i spent the day removing the egr which was a lot easier adn pleasent then i thought it would be. there was A LOT of muck in there but it runs a lot better now so im happy. took it for a test drive and i can hear the wastegate on the turbo opening so i temporarily hooked up my new boost gauge and its going up to 15 psi before the wastegate opens. im wondering if this is too high for the turbo(i think i heard that delicat had his up to 17 or 18) or if it isnt should i just make something that keeps it closed.

My boost is at around eight or nine PSI. I find that if you run it any higher then it spins too fast and doesn't collect as much air in the impeller. This is what I have found, it is also a point that is agreed upon by my mechanic buddies. Other people will tell you differently... smiles.
Falco.

Hi Deli, I echo Falco. Keep it lower.
A quick fix, You can close off the egr line with a normal metal woodscrew, with a large head so it can't get sucked into the line. Then see if it makes any difference to your driving, if not then just drive with that screw in place.
Cheers, Chrsitine.

what ends up happening is under too much boost the air is heated (compression creates heat, heat causes air to expand) it is recommended that you run an intercooler if over 14 psi but some vehicles use an intercooler for all boosting.
the size of turbo housing and impellers will relate to when the boost comes on and when it becomes ineffective. a smaller turbo comes on quick and becomes restrictive at higher RPMs, a larger turbo comes on later and boosts at higher RPM, hence "turbo lag" with the bigger turbos (but they are nicer on the highway drives)

Or you could upgrade...

One thing to remember is that some of the gauges aren't all that accurate.
15 psi might simply be 12 psi which would be fine.
Your release valve for pressure would vent the excess if it's producing I believe
correct?

Somehow.... I haven't really thought of an L400 as an upgrade....

I was referring to upgrading to the VG turbo, not the vehicle which verily it doth thrusteth down the road...

If you're hearing a loud 'PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST !' when your boost gauge hits 15, then it's too high.
Quite possible someone spaced out the wastegate with a few washers. Best to check and see.
11-12 psi is nice IF you have a larger exhaust 2.25-2.5" because then it breathes better

ya its making that sound i know its the wastegate my turbo gauge goes crazy when it does but it only started doing it now that i removed the egr... ill just turn the turbo down a bit maybe to 11 or 12 like you say because i have a 2.5 inch exhaust.
