Back story,
Doing my patrol route from Paradise Valley Squamish to Lions Bay and every where in between. Right up to the hill climb out of Britannia Beach heading to Furry Creek everything thing seems fine. Its here where I notice that there seems to be a lack in over all power, but think it may just be in my head (8 hours of driving every day makes you go abit loony), so I carry on. Once i get to Lions Bay I go to climb to the top so I can see Zorro Bay with my binoculars clearly. When climbing I put it in Low as its friggen steep. Once I crest the hill top and turn into a park spot (one movement) the engine shuts off on deceleration. Im friggen mad now because my exhaust temp was like 800 f at shut down, so I start it up immediately to get fluids moving again. It starts a little rough but not to bad, I figure it stalled (even though its an auto). So I carry out back on my patrol, heading to Furry Creek FSR. After climbing the great Furry Creek hill and turn off onto the FSR it happens again, then again climbing up the dirt road. So I stop and check all fluids, everything is fine, but the engine is really hot and something it smoking from the engine bay. I throw on the heaters and let it cool down.

Once I'v sat for a while allowing the vehicle to cool (around 15 to 20 min) I shut it down and check all fluids again to see if I missed anything. I notice that oil is coming out form around the oil cap and has dripped all over everything, But all fluid levels are still good. I figure something nasty is gonna happen so i should get back down to the highway and try to get back to Squamish. I go to start the deli, and to my horror is slowly shitely starts exactly how it did 2 years ago when my engine shit the bed. It also cant hold its normal idle and dies when Im not prompting the pedal. I get it going and down to the highway and back to Squish with my dad following me (just happened to meet up on the road). On down hills I can cruise but any up hill at all and its down to 50 km/hr. My EGT are generally high at low speeds and boost only kicks in around 3000 rpm and There is a bluish grey smoke color on start up.

- Leaks oil from oil cap and turbo
- Blue / grey smoke
- Rough idle to shut down
- Dies on deceleration
- No boost till 3000 RPM then around 8 or 9 psi
- No Power

- Engine rebuild
- Glow plugs replaced
- Timing belts
- Deli tune
- IP re-build
- All fluids regularly changed
- Airfilter changed this morning, problems persist

I've Jumped to the worst scenario of an engine blow by again or cracked head, but hope one of you guys can bring some less costly scenarios.

All of those symptoms point to a non-functioning turbo and/or poor fuel delivery.

Was the turbo actually rebuilt (new shaft/impeller/balance, etc..) or just cleaned (replacing seal and clean) ? The cost should determine which one. A full rebuild is between $5-600 and a simple clean is around $200.

Take the air pipe off the turbo and feel the impeller shaft. There should be almost zero play on it. If it's wiggling around like a soft weenie, then your turbo needs to be rebuilt, properly.

As for the lack of power, bogging at high RPM, no boost until high RPM, there's blockage somewhere.

If it was sucking massive amounts of air (air leak) or coolant (head gasket leak), you'd see a plume of white smoke.

My initial thought points to the turbo and fuel starvation. A combo.

Where is it now ?

The van is at my place in Whistler and I'am hesitant to drive it any where.

I had my turbo rebuilt (swapped for a rebuilt turbo) at CVI a couple weeks ago for around $800. Im more than sure everything was done correctly, but I have to admit some of the symptoms are very similar to what I had before the rebuild. Is it possible I could have killed the turbo so quick?

I'll be taking it to a local shop as I dont have the time to get to the city, which is horrible in itself as shops on this side of town dont run cheap for delica diagnostics.

Thanks for the quick response Jesse, the deli is how I pay for school, and with all the lightning strikes and fire bans this is the worst time to have an out of commission vehicle.

I'm heading up to whistler tomorrow (tues) afternoon.

I can take a look at your Delica then if that works for you.

I noticed today that there is oil in the boost line to my boost gauge, is that normal?

On an unrelated topic I also noticed that the spongy button that gets poked by the throttle lever at high speed as broken off. Any one know what this piece does, whats it called and would local parts stores carry them?

Just a thought,You probably checked this already...Take a look at your coolant and oil.If your coolant is oily...or if your oil is milky...It might be your head gasket.
One other thing is it possible that you got a bad batch of fuel..maybe you have water in the system.
Oh can you maybe take a pic of the spongy thing?I am wondering if its a max travel damper

i would take a pic but iv yet to figure out loading pic on this site....plus i dont have a camera. doesnt seem like oil is milky or coolant is oily so thats good. the more i read on the net the more im thinking its a blown piston ring. Here one link but iv been reading lots more to.

I changed the fuel filter this morning and it felt better but did not fix the problem. Ill get a compression test done to see whats what

Those are all the exact symptoms I had when a gas attendant filled my tank with half gasoline. Each symptom to the word it seems. I Thought it was head, fuel filter, fuel pump, clog, anything but gas. Open your tank and smell it.

I would also like to know what the rubber covered switch that the throttle hits when reaching fully open. The little rubber boot on mine is cracking, and it is dry> I lubed it, but want to know what it does.

I don't have an L300 to look at right now but I think that shuts down the AC at hi RPM. Maybe someone else can jump in on that one.

That was my impression too, from something I read a while back, anyway, I had a problem with mine that I had to address as it was stopping the gearbox kickdown, because the cam that operates it attacks at a slight angle instead of dead on, it was jamming a full throttle position, lubing the end had no effect, I had to pull the boot back and lube the shaft (fnar), then it was fine, mine was cracked too, but I dont see it as an issue, it's just to keep the dust out of the switch itself and to help the shaft stop rusting, and it's not in that bad an environment, bit of lube and it will be fine, i used motorbike chain grease.

Has this one been figured out yet?

Im off to my compression test now, update when i get back!

Cylinder 2 is only putting out 210 psi, while the rest are putting out 350 to 375psi. Newport recommends taking it to another shop that is more familiar with Delica's for a job that large as the engine must be dropped to see what the problem in the bottom end is. Either way I do not have the money nor the time and patients to do another engine job. I'll talk to the shop that previously did the engine work and get a quote on what they think is up and then most likely sell this Delica off for a very low price and let the new owner take the rains.

My first engine rebuild was due to lack of oil and it looks to be the same for this one as well. For people who are wondering, I do check my oil every day since my last rebuild before every patrol. However, during my turbo rebuild It was noted that the oil level was quite low and had to be filled 2L (though the morning before, before my patrol it was fine). The van drove great for the next 16 days until the hill climb of lions and ferry creek hills, leading to my current situation.

Once I get some quotes in order I will put an add up on here and on craigslist. Any one thats interested feel free to PM me.
