While at idle? When accelerating? Fording a stream? When it's cold? When it's hot? We're going to need just a bit info to work this one out, I think.

				Dutch, where are you based?
You could have issues with your timing belt. Where is the ticking coming from? If it's from in front of your steering wheel ~ is likely your speedo cable. If it's coming from under the van then you might have timing belt issues. Having said that, this is mere speculation ~ for all I know you have a ticking time bomb on board. I concur with Mararmeisto.

There will always be some black smoke puffing out. It's a diesel.
If you can be more specific, then we can help you out.
If the EGR valve is stuck, it can below out some nice amounts of smoke.
The ticking can be different things.
Can kind of ticking ? Does it sound like ticking from the valves ? You may need a valve adjustment.
Have you checked your oil level ? If it's very low, you'll get ticking.
In the cold, you'll get ticking if the oil viscosity is too heavy because it's not making it's way fast to the valves.
Being more specific asking about a problem will get you more specific answers.
Everyone's diesel smokes and ticks.

Dutch, where are you based? Lower Mainland? Inuvik? The Island? I would say to take it to CVI but you might live in Timbukthree....

Diesel engines run hotter than gas engines and require more cylinder wall clearance to allow for greater metal expansion from cold to hot. So they often make strange sounds when newly started up. If it's making sounds when at normal operating temperatures then you likely have an engine issue requiring attention.
Black smoke isn't a bad thing for most diesels. I've noticed particularly for industrial engines that they puff black smoke whenever the accelerator pedal is pressed hard, but the vehicle has not yet responded to the extra power demand.

Check your air cleaner. If it's dirty, that will contribute to black smoke.

				Hi Jesse,
I think your wallet's missing all these 100 Dollar bills and is so thin because your Delica is ticking and puffing black smoke...

Had a good laugh...
Cheers,
Chris
