hey guys.
i just bought a 91 super exceed l300 this march. did me well in a whole season of treeplanting across bc and alberta. lately i've been noticing a whizzing sort of sound that gets faster and louder as i accelerate. I suspect its something to do with my turbo.

does anyone have any ideas on how i can address this issue?

I'm going to be taking a bit of a road trip from edmonton to toronto soon.
so i'd like to be in good stead before i leave

Does it whizz/whir when you rev higher
at a stop or just at speed?
Post short video w sound or something,that
would help figure out what the problem is.
Could be anything from your turbo($$$)
to loose trim around your headlights(no$$)
Hopefully something simple of course!

could be a bearing, like in your alternator or turbo.. could be a belt that is wearing or breaking

Hard to tell from your description - but it sounds like the turbo. It will be an expensive fix if it is the turbo, but it will be an even MORE expensive fix if you don't get it looked at before it gets worse...

I did some further investigating. My belts look like they are in good. shape. I rev'd the van right up to 4000 rpms in neutral and i didn't the noise i was describing. It seems to happen only when in gear as the rpms go higher.
I'm slated to drive to toronto tomorrow after an oil change, but i feel as though i should get this problem looked at. I just arrived in edmonton and was wondering if any of you knew a capable shop in this town?

Hey ,check around the body and headlights gaps,
there is some trim rubber foam stuff that
gets loose and and can make a racket.
A quick way to suss that possibility out
is frame around the headlight gaps with
that green painters tape (comes off easy
if you just have it on there for a bit)
and take er fer
a boot on the highway.

Also do have any roof racks or stuff on the roof?

Other that that might be some drivetrain
thing,but start with the simple cheap stuff

Sounds like a wheel bearing....go fast put in N let engine idle. If the sound is still there it could be a wheel bearing.

It's your turbo.
Mine does the same type of sound. Almost like a cricket.
You won't notice your turbo doing it in neutral because
you aren't putting the motor/turbo under load at that point.
Only when it's in gear. I wouldn't worry about it if your on
your way. Just keep an ear open to see if it changes any.

If it was a wheel bearing it would be more of a grind noise.
You would be able to detect it by the play of the wheel, push
pull and side to side as the van sits.

Totally different sound. You could also detect this
by putting your hand on the hubs front and back
after a little drive and see how hot they are.

Hey there,

I had a weird (relatively loud) turbo noise at one point... i.e. it only came on when under load (i.e. in gear) and under boost (i.e. with the pedal down) and came right off, when decreasing the pressure on the pedal...

It happened after I had a new cylinder head installed at which point (I guess) the mechanic had the intake manifold, turbo, air-filter etc. off the engine...

Well, it turns out there is some kind of rubber or plastic flap or something that is mounted to the airfilter housing - and it wasn't mounted properly or missing or so after re-assembling the engine... without this flap, the air-intake sound / (a sort of weird turbo whining) can be heard much louder inside the cab - but the outside noise remains the same as it would normally sound...

At first I thought, this is kinda cool... finally I can hear the turbo... but after 20 minutes on the highway with constant boost, it gets really annoying very quickly...

Might be an idea to have that checked out... It's a minor thing and assumingly a cheap fix...

I actually made it back to toronto with no problems.
I had my turbo looked at in edmonton by a specialized shop and they told me my turbo was in good mechanical condition and they weren't able to pin point the problem.

In any case i think its actually gotten better. the sound now comes on at higher rpms and after driving for a few minutes it disappears all together, regardless of how much i push the pedal down... strange i know!

in any case when i get to van again i'll have it looked at because the guys in edmonton told me the engine seems to move around strangely. I just assumed that it was the way these things were but who knows.
