I'm leaving to the Kootenays soon and while I have already a big list of stuff I wanted to see and do, I'm interested in what is your 'secret' 4x4 trail, hotspring, hike, lake, camp spot, attraction, river, fishing spot etc.

More commonly called the Thompson Valley or The Interior.

Where are you going in the kootenays? Delicas have to be the most popular vehicle in Nelson.

A few nice hotsprings near Nacusp. Cody caves and Kaslo are nice too. The Grey Creek Pass is a fun trip. Good climbing area near New Denver if you're interested in that. And there are some very cool, very high old mine roads in back of Yimer - or was that Burton...

I'll be motoring that way this fall taking my Australian girlfriend on a tour and visiting my brother - looking forward to seeing all the buses in Nelson

second the Grey Creek Pass.. either from Kimberley over or from the ferry landing in CRaw bay up and over to Kimberley.. Amazing views and worth a couple of days.

If nothing else, take the ferry across Kootenay Lake. It's the longest free ferry ride in the world. The bigger ferry, Osprey 2000, is about the size of what B.C. Ferries use to go to the Gulf Islands.

oh, the saint leon hotspring. the lesser known free diy hotspring site in the koots. i never do a trip across canada without going a little out of my way for the sulfur waters and the sketchy logging roads. if you're not already past the nakusp area, i can give you directions...
also, if you're a stinking hippie, and you're near nelson, you could hike up crystal creek and pick you're very own beautiful terminated quartz crystals right from the freezing cold water, and visit the camperized caves...

Nice hotspring for sure.

Look up six mile lake on the west side of the lake just north of nelson.

Very close to the city, but you'd swear you drove hrs from civilization. There are neat little camp sites and a tiny clear lake full of trout.

Just finished taking the Grey Creek Pass earlier this month - mostly on a whim, it was there on the BCAA map as a dirt road, looked like fun. Turns out, it was fun! The LWB L400's might have a bit of time with it, but the shorter L300's and Pajeros should have no problem. We saw a Subaru Forester blasting its way uphill, didn't look like it was having any difficulties.

It was a bit technical on the east side, but the west side had been graded earlier this year (according to a local in Grey Creek). Nothing so bad that I had to shift into 4-low, but definitely had to take it slow and steady. As they say: as slow as possible, as fast as necessary.

We saw a bear and a wolf, at least the backside of them before they loped off into the bush.

Only thing I'd do differently is take my compressor and tire deflater - crawling up and down at 40 psi was a bit bouncy, even at slow speeds.
