Sell me on a Pajero
Newbie here who has just come into info on Pajero's. I realize that this is a Delica forum but there is talk about Pajero's around, but feel free to flame me and send me on my way!
Interested in an SUV that can comfortably seat 5 or 6 and has the capacity to tow a boat (about a 2000lb load). So I'm thinking of an Acadia, Expedition, Yukon or something similar. My Montana gets used right now for the boat, but it's certainly not ideal.
Then I heard about the Pajero. So from all you fanatics out there, why would I bother paying $10,000 to purchase a 1993 (?) Pajero over a 2002 domestic SUV?
Sell me!

Re: Sell me on a Pajero
Fuel economy
The 2.8L 4-cylinder 4M40 Pajero gets 11-12 liters per 100 km's regardless if you're towing 3,500 lb boat or just driving by yourself.
Not only that but it seats 5 adults and 2 children (jump seats in the rear w/ shoulder belts).
The engine has grunt, the ride is comfortable, the moonroof makes drives enjoyable for the passengers, good window views, great offroad and onroad handling.
What more do you need ?
The answer is nothing unless you need more interior room in which case an L400 Spacegear is a good alternative.

you would want a Delica L400 or a LWB Paj. If your not doing much offroading the L400 would be the better choice (not that it's not good offroad the Paj is just a little better)
also a 93/94 Paj/delica will be better equipped and in better shape than the 2002 domestic SUV, and get better mileage.

Re: Sell me on a Pajero
I'm just wading into the Mitsubishi world so the Delica is a pretty cool option!
My guess is (and correct me if I'm wrong) but the diesels in the Japan Mitsubishi's in the 90's are much better than the domestic 90's diesels in terms of noise, smell ect. Is this accurate?

Re: Sell me on a Pajero
This may be delica.ca, but there is a growing Pajero sub-section on this forum. We also have Stradas, which were the pickup truck.
If you want to seat more than 5 (comfortably) then you're definitely going to want the LWB. Get a '94 or newer because it will have the 2800cc turbo intercooled engine (much more capable than the 2500cc), it'll have the Super Select transmission (shift on the fly AWD setting, and part-time 4WD settings), and it's a dang sight better looking than a Yukon, Acadian or Expedition. Also, it'll get better fuel economy, partly because it's a diesel and partly because the vehicle doesn't weigh 3 or 4 tonnes. And as jfarsang pointed out, a properly tuned diesel gets about the same fuel economy whether it's loaded down or empty (they like to work), which is unusual for a gasoline engined vehicle.
Welcome to the group. I hope you find something you like.

Re: Sell me on a Pajero
Having driven both the Delica and Pajero they are both very good vehicles. My father inlaw has just traded his 2005 Pajero with the D I D engine.I offered my wife the choice of any seven seat 4wd she wanted. We chose the Delica because of its features and the comfort level. We were very impressed with its off road ability and the fact you could walk through to the back.It had ample power and for us the air con was brilliant.(51`c outside 19`c inside with seven people)
Its the only vehicle that I have spent 10hrs in travelling in and felt fresh and relaxed after getting out.

Pajero's and Delica's are fairly comon here.

Re: Sell me on a Pajero
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input. So the LWB is the 4 door Pajero, or is there another model within the 4 door class? Thanks!
Seems like the prices of Pajero's vary quite a bit across Canada with prices being much more reasonable out west. In Manitoba it's tough to find one without importing one yourself it seems.
So far my wife is somewhat receptive, although she's really balking at the right-hand drive! Any experience with making that switch?

The RHD issue isn't worth worrying about, but it is worth a test drive just to make sure that you or your spouse can adjust (pretty likely).Auntbetty wrote:[...]

I was comfortable driving by the time I got out of the parking lot and that was a standard. Lining yourself up on the road is pretty easy. My guess is that this is because were used to seeing things from that side of the vehicle as passengers.
The only thing that got me (and it still gets me from time to time) is the signal light and the windshield wiper. Everything else is fine.

Yup. I got in, drove until I had experienced it, and now I've made the switch.Auntbetty wrote:Any experience with making that switch?
Seriously though, it's not as difficult as some might make it out to be. Everything is the same, you're just on the other side of the vehicle. How do motorcyclists do it without a 'side'? Hmm...
