Victoria police have charged a man with arson after someone set fire to a vehicle in the 800-block of Fisgard Street early Monday morning.
At 12:30 a.m., a witness called police after he saw a man break the window of a van parked on the street, light a piece of paper on fire and toss it inside.
The white Mitsubishi Delica soon became engulfed in flames and was destroyed, said police spokesman Sgt. Grant Hamilton.
The vehicle was worth about $10,000, he said.
The witness gave police officers a description and police arrested a 24-year-old man a few blocks away.
Hamilton said the man had been drinking and did not know the owner of the van.

Someone should make note of the 'estimated damages' for potential future interactions with ICBC, since they are always trying to low-ball the value of these vehicles.
Too bad for the owner. I heard the story on the news this morning, but there was no mention of the type of vehicle. Is the owner a part of this forum? My condolences to the owner.

Wow. That is astonishing.
Why did the perpetrator/drunk target the Delica specifically? Doesn't sound like random drunken vandalism to me - especially since he took the effort to to smash a window and essentially torch the vehicle. For something like this to happen to any vehicle is very, very rare.

the person who did it was caught right away , Perhaps this would be better discussed after the owner has finished dealing with it all. with the latest themes that some of the threads are taking on. the owner is a really good guy who has put alot into his van and worth alot more than what is the guestimate of the news...

Yes, perhaps it is unwise to speculate. With some of the irrational anti-right hand drive propaganda out there, however, a part of me wondered if this act was more sinister than a random, drunken act of stupidity.
I suppose the details will come out in due time. Feel bad for the owner, however - especially given the work he apparently put into his van.

That's a pretty sketchy part of town to leave your vehicle overnight. There's lot's of white ones around. It wasn't electric jester's (sean's) van was it?
