Failed dash lights, fuse box decoded, and black smoke.

ok so i bought a new delica... it's sweet but when i start it (only on cold starts) it tends to stutter. I wait for glow plugs to charge turn the key and it fires right up fine but then once running it starts to do the stuttering only for about the first 30 seconds or so. after that she runs flawlessly. is this normal? serious problem perhaps? i'm worried that when the temp drops to sub zero's it will be even more of struggle for my machine to get going.
another concern is that it seems to run well until i floor it up a hill, off a red light, or at anytime for that matter. if i really push the pedal to the floor it seems an excessive amount of dark smoke start billowing out the back. again, is this normal or should i be worried? i'm new to deisels so don't really know too much about what's going on here.
and finally i changed my cd deck the other day by myself. in the process one of the wires hit the car frame and sparked... ever since this my dash lights have not worked. the stereo works fine but not the dash lights. i checked the fuses and 3rd one from the left, top row (see pic) is blown. replaced it with a new fuse and it instantly blew once again. did i miss a grounding wire or something.... anyone else had this problem. where can i find out what all the japanese on the fuse box means... it would be nice to know which fuse is what? anyone out there able to decipher this very complex looking language.
was going to post a pic but the file size is too large and i can't seem to reduce it. i guess for the fuse box you will have to look at your own but i have a 91 deli exceed. it is third fuse from the left on top row. (15A)

Relax. Its normal. Diesels rely on compression for combustion, whereas gassers have a spark plug. The black smoke is just unburnt fuel from the cylinders. Hammering the pedal just puts more fuel into the cylinder than it can burn. They do tend to idle rough on start up on colder days until the internal cylinder temp comes up to an optimum level. You shouldnt need to touch the gas pedal when starting as the injector pump will deliver enough fuel to start t. Once its running you could up the rpm to 1000 by foot , or use the throttle control lock ( on the left side of the steering column on the dash)
Watching the amount of black smoke coming out of the exhaust is a good indicator if you are wasting fuel. if your foot is on the gas , and you are not increasing speed, as in up hills, just back your foot off until the smoke reduces. It wont completely go away as the engine is under load, but at least you will know its not doing any good. Am I a mechanic....no, but after 5 diesel vehicles , and reading manuals, you start to understand a bit of what its about. My Jetta diesel engine looks the same as my Delica for the most part. Some things I do myself, some I dont.
As far as the electrical issue, my experieince is that if you stick a fork in the socket and it bites you , there is power, if it doesnt you have a problem. It does sound like a ground issue. Id try going back in the dash and retrace your steps. A test light would help too, and if anything, work great on digging dirt out from under your nails

If you can't find the fusebox layout send me a pm with
your email address and I will email you a jpg file you can
print out.
Don't be frightened by the 'use a search button' responses
it's quite common (the response). I myself have tried to search things
out and after going through 80 messages of text get
a little frustrated myself when nothing shows.
If you get the black smoke all the time when you hammer it
I would probably get your delica in for a tuneup/adjust the
timing. If it's mostly when the machine isn't warmed up
don't worry about it.
If your new to diesels remember to warm your delica up
even in the summer time. At least a couple minutes. They
do need a little bit of that to run right. In the winter you
want to make sure you give it more time. That initial
stuttering you mentioned sounds like it hasn't warmed up
enough.

Hey there,
I recently had an issue with lots of black smoke,(and almost no power until i shifted into 2nd) ESPECIALLY after being stopped at red lights.
I ended up calling Butch at CVI on the matter as i was afraid of a mechanics bill....
He quickly pointed out that it could be an issue with my EGR!
Once he mentioned that i remembered that a week before i had connected a vacuum line from the top of my
EGR to a metal line on the top of my engine block. (Thinking that they should be connected)
Turns out they were disconnected for a reason and i had reconnected my faulty EGR by mistake.
After un plugging the vacuum line again the black smoke issue disappeared!

Rough starting: it could be normal, or, it could be you have a dirty injector, or a glowplug thats not heating up so its missing on that cylinder until it gets warm enough to self ignite, its also possible that the cold start mechanism is duff, you should hear a change in the engine note after 5 or 10 minutes if the cold start is working.
Black smoke under power: normal to an extent, but it could be your injector pump is set to over fuel because someone was 'tuning' it, dirty injectors having a spray pattern that stops all the fuel being burnt, blocked air filter, sticking EGR valve.
As for the cd issue, well, you shorted it, and something else has obviously changed somewhere else if its still shorting, assuming you took the wire back off the body

Theres a wiring diagram on here somewhere, you'll need to check everything associated with that fuse I expect, but then checking the fuse box cover:

Thats the horn, so that isnt making a lot of sense to me right now.
