Hey guys i just started having a problem with my 91 pajero. Not sure what it is but its not pretty. I drove for 2 hours straight then went up a hill and all i see behind me is black smoke and loss of power(turbo?). around 2-25 rev. let the car rest, then drove again and it was normal. it was okai for one week goin on the same hill.Todai it happend again. Drove up the hill on 176 to the high way then black smoke appeared. So i stoped to the side for a couple of minutes then it went away and drove fine.. does anyone know what could be happening. soi dont get another epasode of this.I recently did an oil change and air filter. it is at 147km

Black smoke is incomplete combustion ie not enough air (turbo) or too much fuel (pump not injectors because its intermitant) or maybe
not enough compression when it heats up (tight valve adjustment) There are people here who know this stuff way better than
me but it sounds like a trip to the shop. Any smoke since the AF change?Buen Suerte.

Sorry Dude but I don't think a new fuel filter is going to do it. I suggest you get it into a shop before something worse happens in there.
If the turbo pukes or you drop a valve or something like that it will cost a lot more money. Suerte.

You are right. the fuel filter wasnt the problem but i got that change anyways. I decided to unhook my egr hose and plug it and the black smoke seem to went away my second day driving and so far so good. before it would happen every drive. ill keep you posted

Good pick, these egr valves seem to be the source of a fair bit of trouble. Maybe that blockout plate I've been reading about is
worth doing.

Yah i read it up and there seems to be issues. i took the vacum hose out and put a screw in it and drove it around. no more smoke then took it off and mad my self a aluminum blocker. Just finished off so ill see how it runs tmr. Have you guys notice these engine runn really hot? compare to other deisels? not sure but my turbo is spitting out like fire. put my hand 5ich away from the exhuast tip and it burns like madd, but my temp never goes half way. goes just above the first bar

Did the black smoke return after your mod to the EGR?

I had major black smoke (constant not intermittent as described) and really rich smelling exhaust. The problem ended up being a broken intake rocker arm; more specifically the roller broke out of the arm.
