Just got hosed in Canmore - $59.88 for a @*#* oil filter

Post by snelson »

Wow - I am now officially boycotting Canmore NAPA. Picked up an oil filter/oil got the the till, the guy rings it up at $59.88!!! Just for the filter!? (prt# napa 1067)

Ridiculous - I just hate getting ripped off - can't do too much though since I think they're the only game in town.
Will be ordering by the case from someone in BC from now on.

Thanks for letting me rant.
Do I win a prize for being the member who's paid the most for a filter? :? 8-)

Perhaps you could rectify the situation. Too bad we did not talk before you went out there. In fact was that you heading E'bound at 9:15 tonight above 2nd Vermillion Lake? (I was in the Warden Truck W'bound at the time to deal with a Grizzly Bear fence intrusion incident). I bought that same filter 1067 NGF Filter there last year and my price was significantly different.

Because you work for TOB, you need to talk to Jeff Kutzner the owner of Canmore NAPA, and make arrangements to set up a trade pricing account. Traditionally both Canmore Auto and Action Parts have extended Trade Pricing to TOB and Parks Canada employees working in the Bow Valley.

Once you have got your account set up, you can ask them to retroactively apply a credit for the difference between trade price and retail of that filter to your next purchase. Once you have that in place your pricing will then be 'reasonable'. In other words if you need something and don't have time to get to Calgary at least you won't get completely skinned. In fact you can phone them and they will deliver your part to the TOB maintenance compound at no charge.

Ooooh - now there's a tasty bit of info! Thanks JMK.

Nope, wasn't me at Vermillion. By that time I was just finishing up installing the block heater on my toyota truck that literally fell out of the block yesterday. Coolant everywhere.... Interestingly, it was just after the wife got an oil change done in Cowtown - the block heater on the toyota is directly above the oil filter - hmmmmmm :?

BTW, I was meaning to ask, are you up in Peaks of Grassi in Canmore by chance? That's where I am, and noticed there's a blue/grey deli down the road from me, but I think it's a low-roof...
Thanks again.

And thanks for the membership renewal! :M

So that's why I never see your Deli around Banff, you live in Canmore. I live in Banff, and I generally only take the Deli out when I head out on days off, although I do take it to work the odd time after days off and all my gear is still in it.

If you want PM me your phone number and I'll give you a call and the low-down on the trade accounts, etc.

FYI...There is Action Auto Parts in Canmore as well. The owner Murray has been exceptionally good to me and my RHDs.

Hey Vegie, did I see you parked in Safeway parking lot last night? Saw a couple veggie stickers on the bumper.

Another vote for Action Parts in Canmore.

I am aware of the scaling prices at NAPA but even whilst leveraging "mates rates" Action's parts have been significantly cheaper. Un-common parts have generally been available overnight.

In reality if you have trade pricing accounts set up with both of them, the pricing comes out to be roughly the same. If you can't get trade pricing set up, then both of them at retail are also equally prohibative. It makes sense as otherwise how would both of them still be in existence after 25 years? The main difference is in availability of specific brands, each seem to stock different OEM manufacturers. So it is best to check with both of them before you purchase a part and then make your decision.

Hey JMK, thanks again for the tip about Town of Banff 'pricing'.

I got some front brake pads from Napa - I know I said I was boycotting them, but I ended up getting the wrong ones from Partsource in Calgary (still have to return them), and figured I'd give Napa one more try. Mentioned I worked for the town, and the guy was like "Oh, sure, we'll just put you on the account " (or something along those lines). Ended up getting a fair price on the pads.

Thanks again

Glad it worked out. The guys at work say the guys in NAPA have been at it so long they are a lot grumpier. Think I'll take the fifth on that one in case one of them reads this forum!
