Kiwi Deli

Thought it was about time I put something up in the Members Rides section, so may I present Deli! Not a very original name, but it does the job and I'm not great at naming vehicles! My old Subaru was called Scooby, and my motorbike is called Yammy. Can you guess it's a Yamaha?

Anyhow, it's a highroof '90 Exceed and he's my first Deli.

So far I've added roof rails, bike rack and some nice monsoon guards - essential for Auckland winters! I'm in the process of doing a camper interior for it (pics to follow) and the main future plans include a later 'full width' nudge bar, roof basket and rear ladder (have to stand on a box to tie my board to the roof and I'm 6'3"! hehe!).

Oh and I'm planning on fabricating a bike rack/fuel can holder for the tailgate. I got soooo sick of taking the bike rack off the back everytime I wanted to get in the rear of the van when I went away over Easter w/e (trip here).

Anyhow, on with the pics:

Cheers,
Dave :-D

It's been quite a while since my first post on the deli and things have changed a bit so figured I'd update it.

I travelled around the South Island for 3 weeks over Christmas & New Years and decided I wasn't happy with the layout of the interior, so I'm in the process of revamping and rearranging things and figured I'd add some progress shots.

I don't really have any shots of the interior before unfortunately, but it consisted of a fold out bed which folded away into the back of the van behind the rear seats. It worked well but it wasted a lot of space, which became very apparent with two of us travelling in it.

Anyhow, on with the pics:

Firstly I built a new storage comaprtment behind the front seats. It does require moving to get to the engine, but it's no biggy. This is designed so the bed will run onto it, thus maximising other usable space:

My Deli has the rear bench seat mounted where the single seats would be normally. This works well for me as I can carry 5 people and still keep the camping unit in the back all the time. Part of the rear seat then folds down and the bed parts are plonked in place (they're stored under the rear seat when not in use). These mount to the new storage unit and the large rear unit I fitted originally in the back. This layout enables me to have a spare seat in the back which is invaluable for getting dressed, taking off shoes, etc when it's raining outside.

I haven't had chance to do the roof unit properly due to lack of time, so I've cobbled this together for now as I'm hoping to go away for Easter weekend next week. This unit houses the TV and DVD unit so I can watch it in bed :) and also carries my fold out table as it doesn't fit anywhere else in the van:

The old cooker sat on draw runners in the back and pulled out, so I'm refining that and will put it back in, along with some pullout draws etc. Having the bed right forward leaves about 300mm at the back of the van, so this will get a bit of kitchen worktop or something on it for when I'm cooking.

Everything will be covered with some sort of grey material to try and match the original interior at some point.

Deep cycle battery and split charge system should be going in shortly when I finally get around to buying them. These will power the stereo, TV, extra lighting, etc.

Oh, and I've got some nice big nobbly tyres for it too now :D

I missed this thread the first time around. Auckland? Never did make it to NZ via the Navy, so I'll just have to get there on my own (someday). Beautiful country. Even nicer than Australia, I hear. :?

That sleeping arrangement you've made is pretty skookum! How long did that take to build? The middle bench - always wondered if that might be better than the captain's chairs... our kids liked the individual chairs, but I thought the bench would be handy too. Nice roof-tray as well. Very handy, I imagine. How did you secure it up there?

Great bed set-up for sure!
It's hard to see, but how did you attach the roof-tray to the roof?

Oops, didn't realise I'd missed these replies. Sorry guys! :?

Yep, much nicer than Oz. Kiwi's are much friendlier! (I'm a Brit btw). That said, the deserts, etc in Oz are pretty cool. Everything is green in NZ.

The whole thing could easily be made in a weekend, I reckon. Maybe less if you have all the proper tools. It's pretty straight forward.

The mounting of the roof tray was a bit 'temporary', but I still haven't got around to doing it properly  I mounted it using the rear-most grab handles and the trim securing holes inside the rear door. That's not very clear so I'll post up a couple of pics when I get chance.

Cheers for now :-)
