Hello,

Just noticed the other day that, miraculously, my wiper arms have started to rust.... (back and both front ones)... I guess that the winter with lots of snow and lots of salt on the road didn't really help....

Since my van is (still) pretty clean looking I don't necessarily like rusted parts on it... and here goes my question...:

Does anybody know of a product that would remove and neutralize rust, can be painted again (black) and could easily be applied while the wipers /wiper arms stay mounted on the vehicle?

There is a product called "fertan" that I have seen in Europe which you apply to rusty parts and then you let it dry up and "react" and then you simply wash it off with water and then prime and paint... The nice thing about this Fertan stuff was that it was completely neutral for paint (even dripping onto painted surfaces would just be washed off... no stains or reactions.... beautiful....)

Does anybody know or recommend something similar here in Canada?

I used sandpaper (about 2 minutes per arm) and some black tremclad, brushed on and looks great, can't tell there was anything there. not the ultimate answer but it was cheap and still looks good a year later.

There is a product available from Plasti-Kote that comes in a little black bottle with a yellow label. It's an organic rust neutralizer, greenish colored and smells like poop. It is very effective. I've used it on my wiper arms and my bumpers. You can get it at Cambodian Tire, Lordco, probably even at Home despot.

Thanks for the tips... the green-poopy stuff or the sanding and tremclading... did you guys perform the work with the wipers mounted or did you take the arms off? Just trying to learn best practice... Ideally I would leave them on but if you have good reason to suggest they should come off for the process, I will definitively consider that....

Another product to look at would be Penetrol, goes on clear, has really good creep so it gets into all the crevices etc, and can be easily painted over once it's dry. I'm going to go looking for some once it gets a little less damp to use on the 4Runner, which has the usual hereditary rust spots.

for chrome parts SOS pad take the rust right off (i know we dont have chrome wiper blades) but its still handy!

There is a product called Blue Steel that I have used for years. Its a rust converter, water soluble , easy to apply with a brush and can be painted over no problem. I used it on my steel sailboat and use it on my Deli to nip rust in the bud. It does not require metal prep other than loose flake removal. Can usually be found at your local chandlers or perhaps a local auto parts place can order it in for you. A small amount goes a long way so it works out to be quite economical.

I did it in place, didn't need to tape anything off as I was brushing it on.

I didn't "mask" anything, but I did slide a sheet of newspaper under the wiper before working, no tape or anything though.
I used Conquset chemical rust converter and then black tremclad. (used the same combo on my mirror arms and bull-bar too)
