Like me.
Going down a hill yesterday, and was gearing down near the bottom (the Jammy Dodger is an automatic, but I still like to gear down and save my brakes). Had a brain cramp and rather than click two down into 1, I clicked two up into Reverse. I was going about 30 km/h at the time.
What happened? Nothing! It was in reverse for less than a second. It began to slow down, but there was no crunching, no awful noise, no transmission left lying in the road behind me. I put it in the proper gear and drove on as normal, pretending I was cool and nothing happened.

ILMAO! You know.... I did that not long ago! I think that the most damage done was my self esteem got a little bent up
~ but the tranny seems to have survived. Thank heavens for the reverse beeper!

You can actually put yours in reverse while going forward ?
I can't even if I put all of my weight on the shifter (my prev auto's and in the auto Pajero/Montero's I've had)
You're not supposed to !

I wonder if it has to do with the brake. Can you put in in reverse when your foot is not on the brake? I was braking as I did it - maybe if the brake is applied, it unlocks the reverse.

Try it in your driveway: in neutral, try to shift into reverse without applying the brake.
The brake relay is to allow you to shift out of Park. I don't know if it is also used to shift into reverse. Will try this myself, later. At a dead-stop, not rolling along at 30km/h.

Cool....take a pic of the Parliament buildings in Managua if you get a chance....was told they look like our Provincial Capital building in Victoria with but a big gaping hole where the dome should be caused by a bomb blast! My buddy drove from Vancouver to Costa Rica at the height of the Iran Contra crap...he should have wrote a book....

Putting your vehicle on reverse while driving should not cause any damage to an AT no matter what: otherwise there is a design flaw. I did it on my Suzuki SX4 and guess what? The engine just shut off and I was still going in silence, then put it on N, turned the ignition key to start the engine, put it on D and kept driving.

There is a similar thread on the MDOCUK site.
I think most of us have done that.
You only ever do it once.

Yep! I was running low on fuel and decided to coast in neutral down the north side of the Malahat and when I put it back into "drive" I went the wrong way...I was a little sleepy after a days work. The beeper went off before it actually went into gear, but I had about a millisecond of a grinding sound. Those teeth were too long anyway

I avoid shifting into reverse by not pressing the button when move the shifter up, it will move all the way to N but not past unless you use the button, it will also slid back into D from N with out the button. This has been the case in all cars I have driven, it is that way (I was taught) so you can throw it into N when you lose traction in snowy/icy conditions, this gives you the best chance of your tires regaining some traction and you should hopefully be able to at least steer again :)

loki beat me to it. don't press teh button, just slap the stick upwards and you'll hit neutral, and then the OD button for geardowns, which I find aides in slowing the vehicle so well that I never actually "shift" on pavement.
