Superwinch Manual hubs - GROUP BUY - DONE

If anyone would like a set of superwinch manual hubs for their Delica, just post here and I'll reply back.

PM box is getting full.

Advantage over stock auto hubs :

When it's off, it's off. When it's on, it's on. There is no 'accidentally' pops out. I've had it happen more than once.

You don't have to reverse or disengage/engage them.

Example. I have been driving around the lower mainland/sea to sky highway since it's snowed. I just leave the hubs locked. If I need 4wheel drive. I shift it. When I don't need it, I shift it back to 2WD. I don't have to reverse to unlock the hubs.

Another example. I was parked for 2 days while the snow piled up. Instead of shifting into 4WD and waiting for the hubs to engage, I just drove right out since the hubs where already locked.

Manual hubs are more reliable as there are fewer moving components internally and they are more robust.

In 4wheel drive, at full turn (steering wheel) left to right, it puts a strain on the front axles. If you are doing a tight or angled turn (switchback logging roads for example), then you can unlock the hubs (or just one side) while leaving the transfer case in 4Low. This prevents binding in the drivetrain (front end).

Disadvantage over stock auto hubs :

You have to get out to turn them on or off. To me, that's an inconvenience or luxury. I choose to go with the manuals for their reliability.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku

They are $94 USD per set. If I order more than 3 sets, then shipping is free.

With the Canadian $ exchange rate, the conversion is about $120 canadian.

No duty. Add taxes.

Through me, you're saving international shipping rates and customs fees which would amount to $40-80 (they use UPS)

I have US bought online goods shipped to my PO box in Blaine, WA and I would declare them at the border and pay the 7% tax. Duty excluded because they're auto parts.

Summit currently has 9 in stock.

You can't beat the price. These hubs at summit have been an old secret for Montero owners for years.

Let me know if anyone would like a pair. :M

Installation of manual hubs :

1. unscrew auto (shiny) hub cap with water pump pliers or strap/chain wrench. Left <- (loose) Right -> (tight).

Use a rag and clean out the grease so you can see the retaining clip.

Image

2. Take out C-clip retainer (careful as it will pop out. You don't want to loose it)

You can use two flat screwdrivers, the clip does not have holes for a retaining clip tool.

3. Remove flat o-ring washer (unless it's stuck inside the auto hub cap that you just took off.

Image

4. Undo 8mm Allan bolts (you may need a breaker bar or a socket wrench with a long pipe.)

Image

5. Auto hub assembly is now free

Image

On a table/bench :

6. Put the superwinch on 4x2 (Remove two allen bolts in the new Superwinch hub (they come like that so they don't fall apart in the box)

7. Separate the two halves of the SW hub assembly

Image

8. Install hub section and supplied gasket via 8mm Allan bolts (clean them first) 40 foot lbs of torque.

Image

9. Once the 8mm Allan bolts have been torqued down, install the C-clip. You may have to reach around and push the CV shaft outwards to get the C-clip in the groove. *note. There is a small amount of play/slide on the shaft. That is normal.

* Repack with axle grease.

Image

9. Put 2nd half (shiny cover) SW hub on with small (included) torx bolts.

Image

** note. They are tiny and fragile. They do NOT need to be cranked on.

For those who are curious, you can keep the plastic front cap.

$94 for the hubs, but how much does it cost to get them installed when you can't yourself?

If I'm quick I can do one side in 10 mins.

No need to disconnect anything, nor take the wheels off or jack up the wheels. Can be done on the ground.

Shop labor should be .5 hr per side MAX for a total of one hour.

There's at least one or two threads about the install.

Average shop rate is $50-80 or $60 / hr. That's the maximum I would pay to have a shop install them.

That's a ditto for me - "more hubbage"! I'm in for a set.

Sorry Falco, but that doesn't have the same ring as "more cowbell" does it?

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the advantage of manual hubs? I enjoy not having to get 'outta da bus' to get my 4 wheel on. Please inform a delica 'noob' so that I may go forth and help other newbies, and in turn, we'll all know, then one day, we'll rule the world....!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, ignore that last bit, but....whats up?

Edited my original post to include pro/con's and installation notes. :M

The Mitsubishi Montero Auto vs. Manual hubs was put to rest almost 18 years ago when people started putting Aisin manual hubs off of Dodge trucks because of the 'auto hub exploding' syndrome. The likelyhood of it happening is just plain luck. Since the Gen 1's, there have been three companies that have manufactured locking hubs for the Mitsubishi's. Superwinch and Aisin are the two proven one's.

This may be a stupid question as Im not super familiar with 4 wheel drive systems...Will that Wheel lock light still come on when they are locked with the manual hubs?

Im assuming it will cause there's probably a sensor somewhere along the line..

Is it possible for them to freeze or get stuck and not be able to manually switch them over when you really need it?

Can you just leave them locked all year around? Or, like auto hubs, should they be locked and unlocked every once in a while?

Its like anything else, everything needs exercise or it stiffens up. Leaving the hubs on "perma lock" will result in them seizing at some point. I make it a habit to work the 4x4 at least once a month ( a quick 5 minute run down a gravel road ) Keeps the grease plyable and doing what its suppose to. Ive had "auto locks" on my full size Ford go on me and replaced them. took about a year and the new autolocks crapped out too. Switched to Warn manuals and have been trouble free for almost 150k.

Hundred bucks a set is cheap piece of mind.
