I picked up this little gem at Wally-world the other day for ten bucks



Then I screwed it in between the center console and the passenger seat,



The passenger still has to do the hug-a-mug thigh hug!

Looks like you could also put a gallon jug into it at the farthest extension. Guess I'll have to start saving for one as I still haven't solved that mug dilemma either. Give us some feedback after you've used it for awhile.

I just put one of those cheap holders that have a sticky part at the bottom inside the arm rest. When I have a mug I open it up and put it in, when I don't I close it and the holder vanishes as well as in some cases the mug, if its a short one.

As an added bonus for when driving on logging roads while camping ect, it also has the advantage of being able to hide what ever can of liquid one is drinking by simply closing the lid... helps set a good responsible example to those who wish to chat about my cool rig

Wow, I do like that concept a lot. Now I knew there was another reason I should have bought a Super Exceed, I may have LSD, but I don't have the friggin arm rest!

Hmm, I've got a super exceed, but I can't see where to mount a cup holder on the arm rest, any pictures?

I'll try and post a picture later tonight if I have time(it's really quite unimpressive), but don't they all open up? You know how when you open it up there's two cup holders in the top which go way to the back when it's flipped open, making it pretty much useless to use for driving right? I have it lined up so that the sticky one I put in lines up with that, so it gives added space for the cup/mug/can to stick into when I close the lid. At least I think all the super exceeds with the arm rests have this feature, I could be wrong.

Oh, OK, I think I get it. It's on left arm rest, I was thinking you had it mounted on the door. Unfortunately my travel coffee mug which I can't leave home without wouldn't fit in there and allow it to close, but it still might be a good solution for me.

Ha ha, yea I should have stated left arm rest, or center console perhaps, oops. Not all of mine fit as well, so when I'm finished I usually just lie the mug flat with the stopper plugged and close the arm rest. But more importantly, why would a vehicle that has so many neat ammenities like refrigerators, keep warmers, 5 sky lights, swiveling chairs, mechanical curtains, not to mention a Karoke machine, lack a friggen cup holder for the driver? That one never made sense to me.

I think it's simply a matter of these vehicles pre-dating the cup-holder craze that swept through the industry in the mid-'90s. Wouldn't be surprised to see the '94s or '95s with them, and probably the L400s. Should find that out next year...

Apparently the cup holder phenoma was unique to the USA mini vans in the 80's much to the bemused European auto industry that did not adopt them with the same enthusiasm. Some guys that did a case study of Volvo cars said, "Despite very poor customer satisfaction scores on the feature, European auto producers (including Volvo Cars) failed to implement adequate cup holders. Instead of trying to develop insights and knowledge about how American customers actually used the holders, the companies continued working with quantitative measures and metrics."

So, I guess it's a pretty good bet that the Japanese market was very much closer to the European's and thus that's why the cupholders in '92 vintage vehicles were as we see them.

Like most of you, I found my arm doesn't have a CV joint to enable me to reach anything in the 'tipped back' armrest, so resorted to sticking one of these in the Mystery Machine:



It works realy well and can be taken out/fitted instantly with no drilling/mounting needed, but cannot find one as nice for the Mud Monkey (bought the original one about 5 years ago when I first discovered the lack of contortional moevement in my arm) so I am using an uglier/cheaper version temporarily....it still does the job - although lack of stering wheel/dashboard currently makes it difficult to 'road test'



As for the L400 - yes, these come with a twin 'pop-out' cup holder in the dashboard (one of the few things I like about the L400) but they are fairly fragile and prone to breaking!



The other option for L300 owners is something like this: Pop-out cup holder/storage tray which would fit nicely beneath a single unit stereo but seeing as I am using this space for 'something else' I cannot fit one.
