Surfer Joke of the Day

Saturday morning I got up early, put on my long johns, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to put my boards on the roof, and proceeded to back out into a torrential
downpour.
There was snow mixed with the rain, and the wind was blowing 50 mph.
I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that
the wind would be blowing hard onshore throughout the day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into
bed. There I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible."

My loving wife replied, "Yes, and can you believe my stupid
husband is out surfing in that ****?"

I still don't know if she was joking...

Have to revive this thread.

Reasons Why Surfboards Are Better Than the Opposite Sex...

Surfboards curves never sag.

Surfboards last longer.

Surfboards don't get pregnant.

You can ride a Surfboards any time of the month.

Surfboards don't have in-laws.

Surfboards don't care about how many other surfboards you have ridden.

Surfboards don't care about how many other surfboards you have.

Boats don't mind if you look at other surfboards, or if you buy surfboard magazines.

If you say bad things to your surfboard, you don't have to apologize before you can ride it again.

You can ride a surfboard as long as you want and it won't get sore.

Surfboards don't care if you are late.

You don't have to take a shower before riding your surfboard.

ps. Anyone surf on the east coast of van isld ? :? 8-)

Ditto. I've been to Tofino, I've been to Powell River. Not alot of resemblance between the surf... :?

PS - This thread could prolly be moved to the Water Cooler section...

I grew up in Qualicum Beach. It can get very surfable there and what a novelty! If you time it correctly you hit the wind shift and it will be offshore and clean for a bit.
Here are some pics I stole from Island longboards I was out both of the days.

The consistent places to check are Kinkade road beach and Nile Creek. I have head high waves at Nile Creek!

Image

I don't live their anymore but I have been succsesful in finding surfable storm swell in most of the places that I have lived.

I lived and worked a very flexible job throught the winter in Campbell River. I was living and working in an apartment building on the ocean and way would wait for the storms to build then head out. After the wind dies there is about 45 mins of clean surfable waves. I will add some pictures tonight.

I now live in Port McNeill and have found some local novelty surf spots. Never really epic but fun all the same!

However the best storm swell waves I have ever surfed are at Ambleside Park. I hit that wave amazing one day in 2005. I had been surfing between the jetties and I noticed a wave at the pier. It took me two attempts to get out as I got raked over the rocks the first time I tried. On the North side of the pier there were gaping barrels (8') pounding the beach. From the end of the pier howver there were amzing head high waves peeling into the bay! I caugth a half dozen waves and then I had to leave. No pictures from that day but in is vivid in my memory for all time

Here are a few more of Qualicum:

Andy, I used to surf up at the Nile and a few 'other' places north of there on a good SE blow from 93-02 when I lived on the island.

Lots to be had if you hit it right.

You are correct Jesse! You to be willing to be out in slop 90% of the time but sometimes you are rewarded.

Here are some pictures of Campbell River. As I mentioned previously I was working and living across the street from the ocean one winter
so I was on it anytime it even looked remotely surfable. This wasn't the best day but still pretty decent.

I just enjoy being in the water so I will be out pretty much any weather. Lots of "surfers" and ignorants say that you can't surf wind swell but I do and if they can surf on the Great Lakes we can sure as heck surf on the East Coast of VI.

Some of my favorite other places that you "can't" surf!

I usually surf just north of Bowser.

Took me a few years to figure out where and when to hit it. Usually a 1-2 hr window once the wind drops after gales.

Pretty cool stuff. More and more peeps are getting to know the where.. but not many know the 'when' when it 'really' gets good.

hey hey I spent many many many years surfing the east side of the isle. I live in courtenay for 10 years. Even started the goose spit surf club ( just as a joke cause you won't belive how many time I heard " you can't surf out there"). it is diffenatley getting more popular. 10 -12 years ago there was no one out now when I go back and ride the wind swells I almost always see someone else out there. One of the best places I found is little river. the wind wraps around the point and you can get some pretty good rides. I mean it, some super fun rights. it has a wicked rip so you have to time your ride with the mini sets they come in and if you miss time it you will miss it and have to paddle in and walk back up the beach. sorry no pics it was before the whole digital camera thing. I have surfed all up an ddown the east coast of the island and always have fun. I live in north van now and the swells are not nearly as consistant but fun. ambelside is pretty fun if the island wasn't there ambelside would be epic. great bottom shape and jetties that would make some great waves. it only works on a north west wind and it pretty much the planets have to align. the tide has to be just right and along with the wind and the moon and the stars. ANy how surfing the wind swells is fun and the best part is you don't need open ocean to get a few waves.

Since a dead thread was given new life, Mitch (wonder if he still visits?) and Max's question; one and only time surfing PR was 10 years ago during a phenomenal November storm. 80 - 100 km winds, lines down every resulting in mega overtime for me later. But as I couldn't work due to weather came home before noon, checked out the beach with sideways rain and a actual curl near the point. Sprinted back up to the house, put on the 7mm wetsuit and using a Bic windsurfing board realized I could actually long board. 80km winds at my back allowed for some awesome fast runs and I stayed till dusk. And am as disappointed today as I was then that no one would walk down and take a picture.

We rented a high bank waterfront home for the first year in Powell, with its own beach cabin. And long boards are all I rent on the west coast since.

Cheers
