Was just wondering about going down to California on the Deli... their restrictions are only for residents and not for visitors, right? Therefore, there shouldn't be any problem with driving into Cali since I'm not sure if (probably not but...) our Deli's pass those strict emissions laws for California...

In general, if your non-commercial vehicle passes the rules in the province/state it is licenced in, then it is supposed to be acceptable in every other state/province.

For example, Canadian vehicles require daytime driving lights, American vehicles don't. But Americans don't have to install them to visit.

Of course, the rules for commercial vehicles are completely different.

Caca, (Pooh ) You're good to go, won't be an issue at all unless you plan to live there... (Just like Ruminante pointed out.)

So go ahead, plan your trip, get out and take lot's of pictures!

Oh, ya. Strongly recommended you take copy of your Out-of-province inspection certificate to "prove" it is legal in BC in case you get hassled. (The fact that you have valid licence plates might not be sufficient if you get a cop that's being a jerk.)

And if you push your luck and cross the Mexican border, if I recall right your BC insurance won't cover you anymore so you need to get special insurance before you leave BC, but that's for Mexico only...

Last time driving south (Nov 05), we made it as far as Cresent city Ca with the time we had for that hwy 101 trip, only encountering positive reactions to the Delica. In a restaurant parking lot just off two hwy's turnoff's, in said city, three troopers beelined straight to us as soon as we parked. Well an incident from my late teens caused me to feel like I should immediately lay on the ground with hands behind head, turns out the scary looking troopers were very friendly and loving the van. The oldest trooper even raved about Powell River, saying he wanted to retire here.

Others have said it, if you go looking for trouble you'll find it.

If you're only visiting, your vehicle is road-legal in any country that is a signatory to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Your driver's license is valid as well. The only gotcha is insurance (Mexico, and anywhere further south), and any temporary import requirements (ditto). Our Delicas may not be imported in to the U.S., but we are welcome to visit in them.

Signatory countries may agree to waive some provisions if they wish; Canada and the U.S.A. agree not to care if the vehicle is from a state/province that doesn't require a front license plate, and waive the requirement for the oval country sticker on the back of the car.

The only country anybody is likely to visit that isn't a signatory is the Peoples' Republic of China.

I've only had Gumdrop south of the border once (Seattle, last October), with zero official notice, in either direction.
