Save Money on Oil Filters?

I'm not much of a car expert, but from what I can tell if a vehicle has the same engine, the oil and oil filters will be interchangeable.

That being said, the engine in my 2003 L400 (arriving soon) is a 6G72, which is shared by a few vehicles that WERE sold in Canada, such as the Mitsubishi Galant. I can hop over to my local Canadian Tire and get oil filters for a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant any day of the week, just like any other locally sold vehicle.

Is there anything wrong with this logic? I also spoke to a mechanic friend who works at a Toyota dealership, and he said there wouldn't be any issue. But I've dug around here (search bar FTW) and other places on the internet, and haven't found anything on this topic, which makes me a bit concerned. All I seem to find are sites that sell OEM filters that people seem to be buying, but I'd like to avoid the markup and shipping costs. If I can easily grab filters locally that is a huge benefit for me. It also seems like a big selling feature for a vehicle that many may shy away from for lack of local parts, especially the ones needed for regular maintenance.

Thanks,

A filter is a filter is a filter. As long as the threads are the same and it is about the same size so that the gasket seats properly go for it. Doesn't matter what vehicle they're made for, they are all the same inside. Or try fitinpart.sg, I get my diesel oil and fuel filters from there and its like 10-15 each with duty and shipping.....

Thanks! When I bought my first Diahatsu Hijet there was no way I was spending $30 on an oil filter and having it shipped from Vancouver. I took a tap, checked the threads and then went to Canadian Tire and searched until I found a filter that was pretty much the same. $5.99 - and I can buy it with my Canadain Tire money - win!

Take care,

In hopes this is useful for some...

4M40 oil filters:
BALDWIN B7121
FLEETGUARD LF3817
KOBELCO 2446R332D11
LUBER-FINER LFP8752
MITSUBISHI ME088532
WIX 51675
FRAM PH9055

I haven't checked what filters are available at Canadian Tire as I don't have one close, but would love to add any more filters that are found...

On a motorcycle website I go to regularly, I found an analysis on a specific size of Fram vs some other brands when cut open. Fram didn't fair well, but Fram is the only 4M40 filter brand available in stock locally (Lordco).
