Some advice before a major decsion

So I have a problem and I could use some help from other L300 owners. I currently have a '91 L300 with a 4D56 engine. After being ripped off a couple of times (don't ask not gonna get into it here) I had my Delica taken to a good and honest friend(shoutout to Chuck) to check it out. After some language that would make a sailor blush and some new parts (another shout out to Stephen at Rising Sun), he found out that my Crank bearings are going and need to be replaced. So my problem is should I go for a new engine or get the parts to replace what's broken? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hard to say without actually tearing it down and inspecting everything, but in my experience I would go for a new engine.

If the crank bearings have failed, the metal they've made might have taken out the balance shaft bearings and journals, oil pump, maybe cam bearings and scored/worn the camshaft lobes. The low compression (Chuck and I talked about it) suggests the cylinder liners and pistons are wrecked, which doesn't bode well for the rest. Any fine particles that the filter didn't catch might have damaged the turbo bearings.

The crankshaft bearing journals are hardened. Grinding them to fit undersized bearings removes the hardening, which means a rebuild won't last as long as you expect- best to get a new crankshaft unless you're going for a cheap fix before selling.

All these things can be replaced, but the cost starts to add up. I'd replace the pistons and cylinder liners, crankshaft, all the bearings, cylinder head, turbo, oil pump, grind the balance shafts.

I'm a big fan of the Hyundai D4BF crate motor. You'd have to find a supplier and compare the price to the cost of a rebuild, and think about how long you hope to keep your van.

This is where I got my new engine. Ben is in a bit of transition right now so I'm not sure if he is still selling them. Great engine so far. He has had some owners with over 100,000 km and he only problem is the turbo may leak oil from the intake if you don't use a catch can.

Thanks for the help! I will be exploring my options and going from there. I went to Comox and discovered they are closed for business. They also have a link to an investigation into Silk Roads Auto and Velocity Cars. I'm not too sure what's going on but I figured I would post it as well.

this about Silk Road; Deceptive acts & practices; failure to maintain records; sale of unsafe vehicles.
Nice to know there's some protection for us lay people.
