Hi,

I recently stumbled across the Delicas and want one! I am looking to buy one in Alberta and then drive it up the Northwest Territories. It should be an excellent feel to transport my family, dogs, and gear around town and the winter road.

What are some things I should look for when buying? I notice Velocity Auto has some, does anyone have any experience with them? What are some issues I should be aware of? I am thinking of buying model between 1998 - 2003. Probably gas, diesel is not ideal in the north!

Velocity cars are a good price for a reason. I bought one and I’m generally happy with it. They don’t do any maintenance but maybe change the fluids. That is why there prices are good. If you are a good mechanic then it’s a good buy because you can do the work yourself. I have tried to get parts from them too but the guy never gets back to you. japanoid and Rising Sun are great at getting parts and getting back to you right away. I would also recommend having someone look at the vehicle if your out of province. They don’t always post pictures of the problems with the car.

Also you definitely need to do the timing belt before you drive it.

I am definitely not a good mechanic, my brother is but he is on the otherside of the country which doesn't help either

There are a several on kijiji right now in the edmonton and calgary area that are of interest. It is tough buying a car from a distance. I bought are truck without seeing it but it was brand new, a bit different then this lol.

Other then the timing belt what else should I expect??

Look on the ones Rising Sun has for sale on Craigslist. Diesel is a bit different from a gas model so follow the list that he fixes before he sells them. Also there’s probably a list on this forum of stuff to do right away. Another option is to import one through a importer. It would be way cheaper and you would have to change the tires, head lights etc... and get a vehicle inspection. That’s what I would do next time.

I'd recommend a gas version, instead of diesel if you don't want cold start issues in the NWT. Also, the gas engine was used in a couple of North American vehicles so some engine parts might be easier to come by. Thirdly, more mechanics comfortable working with gas engines vs diesel.

If you want to go the importer route, I recommend Pacific Coast Auto who are located in Japan. Derek, the owner, is originally from Vancouver and seems pretty reputable. http://www.pacificcoastjdm.com

Why don’t you buy used or local?
You’ll save on a provincial inspection and you can see it first hand before you buy. Not to mention sales taxes from dealers. I’m just saying...
Alberta is good because no PST or HST.
There’s a bit more to choose from in the west here too!
Velocity rubbed me the wrong way they took a $200 deposit from then sold the van on me to another person or so they said!
It floated around the internet and never did sell for sometime.
Then they held my deposit till I almost forgot. I called them and they were having technical difficulties returning my money to my card. Had to leave 3 voice mails till there accounting department agreed to pay me via E-Transfer. A little Unprofessional. So I went local and save myself a bunch of hidden costs.
