So I'm trouble shooting my delica starting a... uh a little rough as soon as temperature drops, and there a lot of awesome threads here for helping me out. But then I came across two odd things that i doubt many other people have come across.

a) return fuel rail on injectors might be on upside down? the return line that goes back to the IP is off the third injector instead of the second like I'm seeing in images online... Is this negligible? Or a huge red flag? I have no idea... Just got the injectors tested. have reinstalled them and realized the rail from my before pictures was different. Should I flip it back around?

b) I found a set of vice grips crimping a coolant hose on one side of a tee that's attached to an aftermarket coolant heater i've found installed. I'm assuming this was a quick fix to some leak. I haven't had any overheating problems. Haven't been driving it enough to observe any coolant loss. I guess I'm asking if I'm looking in the right direction in regards to this being a leak. (This subject I haven't done a lot of due diligence with looking into yet as i'm focusing on the starting.)

Anyways! Thought I'd just throw this out there, and now i gotta get back to testing my glow plugs.

I've only ever seen the return line coming off the third (counting from the front) injector, both in person and when looking at pictures in Google Images just now. Perhaps take a second look at the pictures you're seeing- the black cam belt cover is the front of the engine

The vice grips sound like the red flag here. Checking out the rest of the engine sounds like a good idea!

Ya, i pulled off the return rail and realized how it works and confidently put it back together. :) I have a tendency to mix up little menial things.

A red flag for sure. I made this purchase while working crazy hours and didn't do my diligence before picking it up. Finding the Coolant line crimped was pretty alarming. Especially seeing rust on the vice grips. They sellers seemed very genuine and honest but you never know.
Im sure the A/C has been removed from my vehicle. I'm curious if coolant would be used anywhere along the A/C system. Following the coolant line is pretty tricky and it looks like its going somewhere towards the front grill passenger side. To see the rest I need to pull things apart. If I figure it out tonight I'll try and give an update.

Well after being held up a little bit health wise ive been getting a bit done on the Deli - thought I'd just update for sanity. (also can't seem to embed imgur pics so they are just linked)

I've recently purchased a 1993 4D56-T L300 Mitsubishi Delica with 270000 KM on it. I quickly realized it was burning through way too much fuel, and became near impossible to start at low temperatures. It blew a lot of white smoke until the engine warmed up. After lots of research here on Delica Canada I've done the following.
- flushed the fuel lines + new fuel/air/oil filter + fuel treatment
- tested NKG glowplugs (checked out - look brand new)
- checked power to glowplug rail ( 9.5-ish volts 3-4 seconds w/ relay)
- pulled, serviced/tested fuel injectors. (look brand new) Fourth cylinder injector soaked in diesel once removed and was leaking around the base. After servicing the injectors at a local diesel specialist I reinstalled them with new seals from Coombs. The 3rd injector seemed to have a small amount of diesel collect around the injector after an hours drive unfortunately so I'll have to look at that.

Still had the same problems. Fuel economy got a little better.

I found while changing the oil filter that the center ring had blown out. meaning this thing hasn't been filtering oil for who knows how long. So my simpleton mind now says, hey, compression test time.

I then took it into a local shop who had the best reputation for servicing delicas in Calgary. They claim a new head has been installed on the engine. good news. However there is no paperwork for this. I got them to do a pressure test and the numbers came back too high and I'm dubious that they are accurate. I'm reluctant to pay to get it tested again.

410 400 410 400 psi or around there - do these numbers seem genuine?

They claim that I need to rebuild or service my fuel injection pump. Which would be my next suspect after compression from reading here. And proceeded to quoted me 6.5hrs and parts and 1000$ for another shop to machine it - on top of the 3hrs+shop sup+"parts" bill for the compression test and diagnosis and fuel treatment( which I never asked for) . So I decided to pull it myself and send it somewhere with a better rebuild reputation. I'm thinking CVI or Rising Sun.

The great thing about a cab over is you can work on the bloody thing from the drivers seat. Great for someone recently crippled! A little nervous about getting the timing right again - but I enjoy figuring stuff out and have lots of time. I guess we'll see.

Those compression numbers are perfect. A brand new engine makes 440psi, the lower limit (according to Mitsubishi) is 320psi, with no more than 20psi difference between any two cylinders.

I feel like the symptoms are compression related.... Maybe I should get a second test at a different shop.

I talked with a couple shops and they are hesitant to push the pump rebuild. So I've just been trying to tune things up and see where that takes me.
I just finished inspecting all my timing belts and timed my IP. Hooked it all up again and it almost seems as if the problem is worse. I noticed while bleeding the fourth injector it behaves differently. Like it's injected with air. The other three lines simply dribbled. I'm thinking this a potential sign I've got an air leak in the IP. I have a video of an awful idle where I'm half way on the pedal to keep her alive, and another of bleeding the fuel line. I think I'm going to rotate the IP the opposite direction it's resting in and see what difference it makes. If anyone has any ideas Im half cut on carbon monoxide so I'd appreciate it [emoji846]

Heritage auto cleaned the lines and have claimed to put an additive in. I've refilled the tank since. And I haven't used an additive myself.
