I am touring around with my canoe at the moment. One issue I am having is that the rear hatch can not open very far. I removed the rear spoiler and that helped. I have a Thule rack and it fits my van nicely. I dont want higher risers. Its tall enough already. I was wondering if someone in the Delica universe has a good solution for it?

Could you mount the canoe further forward?

I dont really wsnt to do that and i dont think it would help. I am thinking more of a mechanism that can lift the rear up a few inches when I need to open the rear hatch without loosening off the straps. I like the canoe close to the roof. It doesnt make any wind noise and the fuel economy doesnt change much.

I don't know of any roof-rack specific product that'll do what you want but have you thought about using B-line to build a bar off of the back roof-rack at a 45 degree angle to give you the height you need to clear the canoe?

They have an option for a rubberized coating and some pretty neat 45 degree angle fittings. I like B335-2, an adjustable hinge.

Thanks for the good ideas. I have a welder and enough welding skills to build myself some sort of pivot to lift the canoe up. I just havent figured out the details. I dont want to undoe the straps every time i need to open the hatch. I want to build a rood rack basket for the middle and rear crossbar. I was thimking of incorporating it into the roof basket.

If you manage to rig up something cool I'd be keen to see it! I've always assumed that problem was part and parcel of owning a canoe, but I'm excited to some someone more creative than me come up with a solution!

I will keep you guys posted. I am actually playing with the thought of buuldung a dedicated trailer that could carry 3 to 4 canoes or kajaks and 4 bikes. Its pretty tough to get the canoe up there by myself anyways. Hiw do you load your canoe?

I will try turning the canoe and drill holes in the bottom so the water can drain.
Are you from Tasmania? I used to work there for a bit, near the town of Smithton.
