Not shifting!!

Have a newly imported !994 Paj swb with the 2.8 auto, really nice unit but problem with the transmission not shifting. From standing start it wants to be in 3rd gear but I can shift thru gears manually starting in 1st. Does not go into od at all and using the od switch on shift lever there is no reaction from light on dash indicating the od is on or off. Local transmission shop will work on it but need the transmission fault code so they have an idea where to start. It seems to me this is an electrical problem, maybe a relay or something similar, couple things here, has anyone had a problem similar to this and may know what the problem is and or anyone know of a local (Vancouver) shop that has the ability to read transmission fault codes on pre OBDII Mitsubishi.... Thanks in advance

I remember reading about this same problem a long time ago. It was probably on the UK or Australian Pajero forums. Google to find them, there are a few. pocuk.com is one from the UK but I find there are alot of crap 'mechanics', blind leading the blind, so I'd try the Aussi ones first.
Similar problems have arisen simply from the OD switch itself. I think it was more common on the L300's. It can also be a temperature sensor on the transmission. It will put your tranny into 'limp' mode, so you usually lose 1st, and OD so you can still get around. When this happens you can still shift into first manually like you were saying.
Hope that helps. Im also a crap mechanic!

Check the 4WD/OD fuse in the interior fusebox. If yours is labelled in Japanese, check all the 10A fuses. (Actually, check all the fuses anyway).
Oh and please let us know if/when you find the fault, these symptoms occur to L400s as well.

thanks guys, so far what I have found from google from Aus forums is to ground out the OD sensor or replace it (ideally), I did have to replace the 100 amp alternator fusible link when I picked up the Paj at the dock, all other fuses at a glance seem to be ok but will take a more through look to make sure it is not something that simple. The 1994 Mitsubishis were pre OBDII and from what I have learned the fault codes have to be read using the AT warning light and grounding a pin in the scanner plug , anyone had any experience doing that and one other question, has anyone had any experience with Maple Imports in Port Moody..... may wind up taking the Paj to him, any info would be helpful... Thanks

A blown 100A fuse suggests the battery was connected backwards, which might have fried the AT controller. I'd check everything else first though...

When I picked up the unit at dock one of two batteries was no good, longshoremen probably tried jump starting and may( just may) have crossed up....trying to find someone to read the fault codes on pre OBD II ... All fuses in interior panel are ok, finding a Transmission ECU for this particular Paj might be a challenge part #176234.. Tomorrow is another day, wish me luck. Lol
