Oops! Overfilled oil.

So I changed my oil after doing my breaks fluid flush - had it on the lift, so why not?
Trouble was, I did not check the dipstick while filling and I put 8.5 liters of 5-30 Synthetic in my 4M40. Which is normal.
I then took the van out, and parked on non-level ground.
Later, I checked the level on the level, I was worried it would be low. Crap! Overfilled!
I started it up, and it was -2 C, after engine warm up, it was still pushing smoke. Smelled like oil. Not a good sign at all.
Got it into my driveway and began thinking of how to get the extra oil out.
I decided to undo the oil bolt on my oil filter I started drawing that - and my oil did not go down at all.
That is when I realized that my dipstick was in the sump, and the oil filter stopped draining!
Started her up, ran for a bit, then checked level again, and all is well. Only put 20 km on van with overfilled oil.
So, if you drain or drop your filter you can reduce oil on a L400 without dumping all of it!
