I don't have any heat going to the back. The front heater works fine and blows good heat, but the rear heater does not warm up at all. I can get the A/C to work in the back of the van. Has this occurred to anyone else? I haven't started to find the problem yet because Im not too pumped about tearing apart the van, so I'm fishing for a few ideas before I dive in. Is there a separate heater core for the back? Does the duct work just piggy-back off the front Core?

It's a separate heater core, there should be a couple of hot water lines running to it under the van (steel pipes where they cross over the gearbox, rubber tubes everywhere else). The heater unit and water pipes are accessed from under the van.

The first thing I'd do is warm up the engine and feel the rear heater pipes- if they're hot, you've got hot water flowing and it's probably a broken temperature control cable. If you flip the rear temperature slider between hot and cold, you should hear the air distribution flap moving though the air intake vent. If you can't hear the flap moving, it's possibly a broken cable between the control and the flap.

If the pipes are hot and the flap works properly, you might have an airlock in the rear heater core- try turning off the front heater (set the temperature slider to cold), turn the rear heater to full hot, and go for a drive.

If that doesn't start it working again, or the pipes are cold, it might be a blockage- you'll need to drain the coolant, disconnect the rear heater hoses, and flush the rear heater core and pipework between it and the engine. An easy job in summer, not so much fun in winter.

Hi,
on my 1995 model there are two things to do:

1) Switch on the rear heater FAN, which is done by a switch on the dashboard with a fan symbol on it (LOW-OFF-Hi).
2) Put slider to warm: The rear heater unit is under the 2nd row seats. The slider metioned in the previous post is at the front.

This might be obvious to most L300 owners on this site, but the rear heater only works when the one lever is set to blow out on the floor. I thought mine was broken too until someone on here pointed this out to me.

I guess the thinking is that heat rises so when it comes out onto the floor it will rise up from there and fill up the rear cabin.

well that is good to know i guess, in all honesty tho i was hoping that the hot air would also come out of the vents along the roof line on the l300 which would be epic for winter...has anyone tried to add another heat duct so to speak to the upper vents so both upper and lower vents blast hot air?
