Optimal RPM range and engine braking

Busik is the first diesel engine vehicle that I have, so I am a little unsure about a few things.
I was wondering, what are the optimal RPMs, especially what is the lower end of usable range? 4D56 engine, 5-speed manual transmission.
Also, does engine use up fuel while braking? My intuition says yes, just as with carburettor engines, but what is The Truth(tm)?

mechanical fuel pump so only the fuel that the cable pulls should go into the injectors..
so closed throttle means idle fuel at higher rpm...
treat the 5 speed nice..... shift it slow, I would not down shift to slow down (brakes cheap compared to transmissions), be smooth, clean approved fluid....
it is a little weak and does not like abuse... treat it nice...
Never found the 4d56T best power as it really does not have much :)

Its not my driving style to push the transmission or engine roughly unless absolutely necessary ;)
I found that Busik handles best (to me, at least) in the 1500-3000 range, any less rpm-s and its shaky, and more are not necessary in the majority of cases.

THe 4D56 likes to rev more than a typical tractor motor 1500-3000 is a good range higher RPM when climbing moves more coolant through the motor and oil through the cooler... also keeps EGT down...

The 5th gear is a lttle weak, fine for cruising, but if you are going to give some beans then downshift to 4th then back to fifth when you can cruise again.
It will use fuel braking, but not a lot, well not a lot compared to pushing it forward lolololololwtf!
I always find 2250-2750 is a good range, uphill less than about 2.1k and it really became unhappy.
