Injector Pump Trouble

Sooo I took out the IP from my 1986 L300, took it apart and found little bits of metal inside. Turns out the "tension lever" (see picture) had broken.

The rebuild by a diesel expert would cost me 350 euros.

So after visiting some garages and having people tell me that I cannot do that myself I decided to ask for it here :)
I have already read some guides on this but none really tells me about the dangers.

- Is there a place where I can order a tension lever separately?
- What is the critical part in assembling an IP and the reason why everyone tells me I "cannot" do it (rather than telling me where the difficulty lies and how to tackle it)?
