Squeal under load, waste gate?

I didnt; hear any other delis doing this at the last meet.. but mine makes a high pitch squeal under load. It changes pitch depending on how much load and RPM.. however not to say it changes like belt squeal (I've already ruled that out as it makes the noise without belts on). The only thing I can think of is the waste gate opening and making one hell of a racket... does anybody else L300 do this?

Mine recently started doing that too. I suspect the wastegate (diaphragm in particular) is the problem but I haven't gotten any further than guessing.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket, lots of black/carbon was visible around the leak.

There could be a number of elements that would affect your mileage, one would be the quality of the current Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel as apposed to the traditional diesels that we used to use. What kind of fuel additive are you using? Without the sulfur in the diesel providing lubricity the IP is going to be working harder ~ 'though an air leak in either the intake or exhaust systems would also contribute to poor mileage.

How one uses their right foot will make a considerable difference to their mileage. Fuel supply can affect mileage. A dirty air filter element will be the first thing that I would check for, as well as the fuel filter. How often is the oil changed? And with what nature of oil? I use LiquiMoly but once, for two oil changes I couldn't get any so I had to use Castrol: During those two oil changes my economy went from 8.5 kilometres per litre to 7 kilometres per litre (city). After reacquiring my beloved LiquiMoly my mileage went back up to 8.5 kilometres per litre.

Regarding the high pitch squeal, could that be the sound of the turbo doing it's job? I don't remember if you have a full length exhaust or a side dump, which would make the turbo whine much louder.

I think it's usually best to start with the simple things before rebuilding the wastegate system.

I have been chasing this sound for quite a while, I fixed an intake gasket leak, with no difference and alternator belts to no avail either. I am running out of ideas as to what it could be, I am just starting to tune it out until something breaks. It is very frustrating. The noise is also not related to the turbo spooling up or down

Here's a thought: I just discovered something whilst looking for something else. Have you checked your power steering reservoir? I checked mine last night and I see it's quite low (I appear to have a leak). This is just a wild stab in the dark and I've not been experiencing this squealing you speak of. In fact it's been sounding more like some pixie is playing bongos along with the rhythm of the engine, but I'm imagining that the PS belt could cause this sound. As far as the wastegate goes, I'd think that any sound that it might produce would be in concert with the turbo, no?

no its definitely not PS pump whine. It sounds more like a ref blowing his whistle... constantly.... it only happens under load or heavy throttle but it isn't consistent with the turbo spool...

So the noise has revealed itself!! Bese.. check your turbo!! The sound was my turbine wheel grinding against the housing and my TD04 generally spinning itself into oblivion. $600 later the turbo is sporting a new compressor wheel, exhaust wheel, shaft, bearings, and housing... I also did an EGR delete while I was in there... If your turbo is making a high pitch noise that sound kind of like turbo spool on steroids... check your turbo to make sure its still there.
