can i remove the tumblers out of the ignition easily enough? and if i do, will it still work? I was hoping to get it going so i could drive it into the city to get a locksmith to rekey it... kinda expensive if he has to come all the way out to my place. :(

any other ideas? i don't feel too good about slamming a screwdriver into the ignition.

Is your door lock the same as your ignition?

Most good locksmiths can make a new reproduction key based on the serial number engraved on the tumbler body. I did this with my 1973 British Ford Cortina and again on my 81 Mitsu Challenger.

Take your door tumbler out and have the guy cut you a new key that way.

yes... my door IS the same as the ignition...

if i take the tumbler out of the door, he can cut a key for that lock, without needing to re-key all the locks?!!!!!
how hard is that to take out? Anyone done this????

Pulling the inner door panel.

With the window in the UP position:

There are screws in the door handle and several plastic clips around the perimeter where the panel attaches to the metal door.
Remove the screws first.
Some gentle prying with flat metal bars or screw drivers is all thats needed to loosen the panel clips
If you have manual windows the window crank with have either a crank clip (which needs a cheap tool for removal) or a center screw.
If you have power windows you will need unplug that to get the panel off completely and yes the panel must be taken off.

There is a plastic vapour barrier held in place with sticky black goo that tends to get on everything.
The vapour barrier will need to be removed on one side to access the door lock mechanism.
There is a metal clip that holds the lock in place. The clip is slid of sideways and the lock is now loose.
The push rod will probably be attached and should be removed from the lock end only. Usually a simple plastic lock clip that just turns to release the rod.

Take the loose lock to the smithy and he can cut a key or 2 or 3!!!!
