removing Alternator issues

Hey guys,

Think my voltage regulator in alternator is going. Sometimes its all ok (meters fine) but every once in awhile the power indicator lights come on and I meter say 12.5 v. and its happening more often.

Think its time to get the alternator rebuilt or replaced. Out of all the surrounding engine stuff (92 Pajero V44) the alternator looks like a real pain to replace. Do you guys typically remove the vac. pump on rear of it somehow before remove alt. or do you disconnect the entire thing and remove pump when its out of engine bay? Assuming its removed from the top side.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I've been dreading getting the alt. out of this thing.

Artie.

Just removed it, really wasn't that bad. Didn't ever curse!!!

For those who haven't done it on a Pajero it goes out from the top. Looks like its much harder to do on a Delica.

Except sit inside in the dry and work on your motor!!! nothing like setting the valves in a rain storm inside the cab..... :-D

Getting it back in was a bit harder.

A helpful tip is to remove the vac. pump fittings and replace them after alt. is bolted in. Goes in much easier.

Know this thread is a couple years old but have some questions re alternator removal....Did you remove oil filter to get at the alternator... Did you disconnect the vac pump before or after removing the alternator .... spent a few hours on this yesterday and have to admit, I did curse a little :-)

I had to remove my oil filter, intermediate steering shaft and one or two other small things. Also get yours rebuilt, the alternator I bought new never fit correctly and I could never get the alt belt to tighten properly on a mk 1 pajero.
