Hey guys,

I just sold my M101 and need to replace it with the larger M1101. I need to clarify if its possible to import one that is not 15yrs old? When I contacted RIV they said it wasn't possible (had to have a valid 7 digit VIN which it doesn't -too short - and a US compliance label?)

Anyone has done it and can share their knowledge? I don't feel like spending a big chunk of cash just to get denied at the border or insurance...

I cannot say if this will ultimately apply to you being that the trailer is over 15 years old. There may be other methods that could be applied - read on.

It is possible, but a nightmare - even on a newer trailer that did not have the north american compliance certs. A customer of mine related his story about the importation of a trailer from South Africa. He was ultimately successful but he played around for months with the authorities as they tried to justify their position that it would not be possible to register it here and why. Finally after months of going back and forth and asking them to provide documentation that showed the standards he was supposed to meet so that he could have it 'modified' to meet these so called 'standards', they caved. They only made hiom change the tires and they gave him his registration. The fact is they could not produce such standards as they were claiming he had to meet. This was the key.

I can't see it being a problem. People are bringing in boats with trailers a few years old. Should be a way.
