Transmission problem, shifts but doesnt go???

so today i tried to do a number of things to the van.
1.i set out to replace the transmission mounts as i was having a lot of vibration when stopped and in gear. i got one replaced went to the other side and couldnt get the top bolt out of the bushing so decided to leave it for now as it was raining and didnt want to deal with it.
2. replaced all of the shocks
3. changed the oil, which only gave me 4.5L but was still reading full on the dipstick before the change.
was working at a friends house so packed up to leave and van shifts but nothing happens. the lever shifts through the gears but there is no clunk or feeling of engagement and it rolls in all of the gears. i can get it to engage if i rev it to around 4000rpm and then it lurched a little bit but i didnt do that again as it didnt seem like it was a good idea.
so is it possible that in banging around on the transmission mounts or the shocks i jiggled something loose that this would happen. i didnt check the transmission fluid while this was happening but i did check it earlier in the day and was a little bit low, decided that i would need to check it again when running to make sure level was alright.
any thoughts or suggestions. i moved the van in the middle of the work before the oil change and after the tranny mount debacle and changing both front shocks.
