Right CV axle replacement

Hey all,
So today I took on the task of changing my right CV axle. It seemed like it should be simple from a few videos I have seen. We removed the wheel and hub cap, removed the circular clamp on the end of the spline, removed the 4 bolts to the driveshaft. we managed to get the axle out with a little maneuvering.
My troubles are coming from trying to reinstall the axle. In order to gain enough room we have now removed the strut, and the upper ball joint and are still unable to get enough room to get the driveshaft flange to line up.
If we get a ball joint seperator and undo the lower tie rod will that allow the hub enough play to give us more working room?
