1993 2.8 LWB - OME complete suspension kit & 1" coil spacers

Both rear shocks are leaking and need to be replaced... plus I've had to crank up the torsion bars twice in the last 18 months just to keep the front end from looking like its sagging too far, so its time for new suspension. I think a modest lift is in order as well - something that will allow the addition of 32" or 33" tires.

Does anyone know if the Old Man Emu suspension kits for the 91-99 LWB Montero are compatible with a 1993 LWB Pajero??

Any info or links are greatly appreciated... cheers!

Pajero = Montero same truck. different engine and the steering wheel is on the other side. Other than that, it's identical.

OME kits are a direct fit

So... for anyone else that's curious, you'll need measurements on your torsion bars if you plan to replace them. The common flavours are 1278mm or 1308mm. Determining lengths without measurements seems to be some form of voodoo combined with calculus or something. My extensive search efforts yielded nothing concrete whether it was chassis, engine or year of manufacture that dictated the length of the torsion bars.

In my case, the chassis number started with V46 - long wheel base, its the 2.8 engine (4M40), auto, rolled off the line in Sept 1993. Mine had the 1278mm torsion bars. Before and after pics to come once the new suspension and tires are on.

Ordered my suspension package yesterday from Big Country Customs in Abbotsford (http://bigcountrycustoms.com/).

OUIPACK (http://www.arbcanada.com) out of Quebec was cheapest at just under $900 for torsion bars, coils and shocks, but they estimated 6-8 WEEKS for delivery, and shipping it across the country was eating into any savings over the other west-coast vendors.

I also checked prices at North Shore Offroad and a local 4x4 shop. Everyone rang in around $1000-1100 for the complete package, taxes included. The big difference was that BCC was willing to put in a rush order instead of just waiting for stocking orders to happen (which other retailers were going to charge me extra for).

If anyone wants to check around to any other shops... this parts list will help ensure you and the sales guy you're talking to are on the same page.

http://www.arbusa.com/uploads/PDF/acces ... Pajero.pdf

One odd thing I've noticed... One online retailer states that the ARB/Old Man Emu suspension package raises the rear 1.25". This ARB literature states only a 0.50" inch lift. If that is indeed the case, I may just see about getting some 'pucks' made up to boost the rear coils a bit, and crank up the torsion bars a bit more to level it out as needed. I'd really like to get 33" tires under this thing. 32's would be ok, I suppose... but I don't want to go to a wider profile tire, either. I can get 33's in a 10.5 width, but the only commonly available 32's I can find are 11.5 wide.

More to come as parts arrive!

Hello. Sorry for my delay on this. I have an OME with nitro sport shocks in my Pajero. It's great. Huge difference handling. Yes you only get .5" out of it... they state 1.25" on rocky road because if you have a newer model or the sport Montero you get that but for our models it's only.5
Mine rides great although more height in the rear would be nice as the regular duty springs from ome seem light. I may go with the lifted tjm med springs only because ome makes regular or very heavy..constant 450lbs of accessories at all times. Tjm seems to be the middle man and with some height. End of the day you will love the ride quality with the ome. Enjoy hitting the highway corners 30km/h faster than you used too.

Thanks for the reply, Lee.

I got similar input from the folks on pocuk.com forums from across the pond as well. As a result, I'm thinking about adding 30mm spacer rings for that extra inch of lift. From what I've read, coil spacers available for the Toyota Sequoia are a direct fit for the rear coils on the Pajero/Montero.

PS- Just talked to Big Country Customs and the kit is in, they're going to check on spacers before shipping it out to me. More to come...

Only spring spacers I can find for a Toyota Sequoia are for the front strut. Nothing for a rear coil spring...

I had the same issue with the Sequoia stuff... I was able to find one set of coil spacers, but they were 2" tall. I didn't want to push it that far just in case it was too much for the shocks or too difficult to level the front by indexing the torsion bars. I also don't want to put any undue stress on the CV axles, as this is my daily driver in the winter.

I did find a couple references to Rancho rear coil spacers being used in a Mk2 Pajero over on Expedition Portal and 4x4wire, though. The part number is RS70081. Its only a 1" spacer and they run about $75/pair, depending on where you source them. Big Country Customs ordered a pair for me and the rest of the ARB/OME kit is already en route. I'll take some photos of the parts when things arrive.

Sweeet! ARB/OME kit arrived today... just waiting for the Rancho coil spacers to arrive now. I also ordered tires today to make sure they had 5 on hand when the truck goes into the shop.

I had General Grabber AT's on previously but I found that they tended to push or plow a lot when trying to turn in more than an inch or two of snow (overnight dumps of 6" or more are commonplace up here) so I'm going to give these a try in a 31x10.5x15

https://shop.kaltire.com/tiresdetails1/ ... dsearch/1/

We have a bunch of our work trucks running them already and the field guys say they've performed much better than the Nokkian Rotivas we previously were equipping field trucks with, and the price was decent too.

I was too lazy to haul the boxes of goodies in, they're still in the back of the Pajero. I'll bring them in tomorrow and take some pics of the loot. Its like Christmas come early! :-D

Exciting! Where did you get the ARB/OME kit from? I found a supplier in the states, http://www.rocky-road.com, who will set spring, bars and shocks for $754 - All OME. I put an OME 'kit' on my landcruiser before and wow, felt like a whole new vehicle. The shocks in my rig are toast, and I plan on doing shocks and springs when I do decide to tackle it. Where did you get your 'kit' from? How much bling?

Excited to see the pictures and the results.

EDIT: Nevermind, just read all the previous posts. Still excited to see the results.

Got ambitious today and packed the boxes inside (still waiting for the spacers, tho). Opened up a few of the boxes just to have a peek at all the hardware waiting to be installed.

Rear springs, one of each of the front & rear shocks and the torsion bars:
Image
I didn't actually take any measurements, but just from eyeballing the bars/springs compared to the original Mitsu equipment... these things are BEEFY.

And while I was out, figured I'd wash some of the salt off the Paj as well, and then measured the height to the top of the wheel wells for comparison.

Front:
Image
Roughly 35-1/4"

Rear:
Image
Just a hair higher at 35-1/2"

So unless my math is wrong, the OME kit adds approx 0.5", then the 1" spacers, plus going to 31" tires (compared to the stock 265/70-15 which are approx 29" high) should put the top of the wheel wells around 38" when its all done... and more importantly, its a gain of 2.5" of valuable ground clearance.

mmmmm, looks tasty! I can't wait to read your performance review! My Paj is bouncing and clunking all over the place, it's quite annoying. If you're review is positive, I may go with OME again as they did wonders to my BJ74 landcruiser two years ago.

Any reason why the boots are different on the shocks?

I got the same kit other than I didn't change the torsion bars just had them cranked up. Made a pretty big difference when cornering at speeds. My Paj is sitting at 36" when I took the same measurements you did.

Exciting stuff too bad mods cost so much.....alot more I would like to do too.
