Which one to buy for round the world trip???

Post by lambo1898 »

Hi all,

Hello from Ireland, love the site!

I've just joined the forum but am most likely going to be on here a LOT over the next 12months and beyond. I am planning a round the world trip (leaving in 12 months) and intend to buy a Delica this week as the vehicle to take us. I did a Dublin to Mongolia and back trip last year in a Land Rover (big mistake) and am doing this the trip this time over a much greater distance and with my other half so decided a Delica offered the best all round option.

I am thinking of buying one of the two below and was wondering which one people though was the better option. Bear in mind I will need excellent off road ability, to cross rivers etc, lug spare parts, tyres etc and sleep in it for the year. I am hoping to buy a pretty good base vehicle and am ready to do any mods etc needed to improve its suitability for the journey.

Here they are:

1. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mitsubishi-L3 ... 20c8a63db2

2. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4006274.htm

Which one would you go for?

Cheers lads,

Daniel.

the ebay one you would regret. it's a road princess.

If you are looking for "excellent off road ability, to cross rivers etc, lug spare parts, tyres etc and sleep in it for the year."

then the LWB L400 on pistonheads is without question the better and sensible choice.

Thanks for the reply, obviously the l300's aren't as good off road so? Just presumed with the chassis lift etc that it would be quite capable but as I said I'm completely new to Delica's so you guys would know way more

L300's are good offroad. 'good' is relative to what you want or need in a vehicle offroad. It's no Nissan Patrol or Toyota Landcruiser but is still quite capable.

That L300 was made for show, not functionality. The COG (centre of gravity) is far too high and the homebrew long arm conversion is interesting to say the least.

Now you've got me curious. Mind if I ask what type of land rover you had and what happened?

Here are two world trip threads to help you form your own opinion. One is the Delica L300 Starwagon, the other is the Delica L400 Space Gear:

http://www.delica.ca/forum/around-the-w ... -3535.html

Regarding the off road functionality and centre of gravity of the L300 Starwagon ~ here are a few youtube videos:

Falco.

P.S.: I agree, as posted by JFarsang ~ the L300 in the E-Bay listing is not going to be very good for anything other than for club meets, &c., plus on the road it would be more prone to breaking down, in my opinion. I wouldn't pay 4,000 quid for it. When you see the Starwagons in the videos you'll notice that any lifts are nowhere near that high. Ideally, I wouldn't lift higher than two inches ~ mine is an inch and an half. Don't forget ~ you have to get under things as well as over things and when you think about it, being a body lift ~ it doesn't really have that much Earth clearance, anyway. FC

P.P.S.: There's a P25W Jasper going for : £1,295.00 in Chard, Somerset that looks promising: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mitsubishi-de ... 6rk%3D1%26

Bring a mechanically minded friend with you and check that one out... smiles. FC

A standard L300 is better then a standard L400 in off-road, that's OK, but...
But this L300 on eBay is a joke, i think, it will roll over at the first major obstacle.

For a world trip i will choose the L400, looks way reliable with the necessary modifications.

cheers!

I believe either platform is a good choice if you get one with known good history and do all major maintenance and upgrades
Measure it twice, cut once. Dam still cut wrong
