Ha. What Europe needs are some big stinking Lincoln Navigators! Six to ten miles to the gallon and a new string of S.O. stations. Seventy miles to the gallon ~ what are they thinking?!

Falco.

When they tested the Volkswagon Polo on Top gear I think it got 80MPG. Aren't the Gallons in Europe a different measure than the ones in America though?

But did you get the reason you can't get 'em in the States? ...

"...He says he was told by the VW dealer that high-fuel efficiency motors emit 10 percent more pollutants per gallon of fuel than do U.S.-based cars.

"When you work it out, though, it gets twice as good fuel efficiency, so you actually get less pollutants in the air," even though emissions are 10 percent worse, the man said."

So it actually pollutes LESS but the US government, being an idiot, sees only the "10% more" data and decides it must be bad. A typical Ford Powerstroke produces slightly fewer pollutants per gallon but uses up waaaay more gallons in a given distance!

Statistics to a cause is often like a lamppost to a drunk ~ more for propping things up, rather than for enlightenment.

Thats a loaded question, a UK gallon is slightly bigger than a US gallon, but the rest of europe doesnt even know what gallons are as it's all metric as far as I know, even countries that have their own old counts have since changed, so all the calculations would actually be based on l/km I expect.

One Canadian Imperial gallon is equal to 4.55 litres, Imperial being the operative word.

The American S.A.E. gallon is Equal to 3.78 litres.

Considering it's an America website, it's likely the smaller US gallons is the measure. Which means it gets comparatively higher mileage when Imperial gallons are the units.

Either that or the person writing the article is oblivious and is using SAE and imperial gallons as equal in which case the Passat isn't as great as they would have you believe!?
