Just bought a couple of thousand litres of filtered WVO. Good oil but I'm worried about bacterial or fungal growth since it will take me more than a year to use it in my single tank system. I know there's additives for diesel fuel. Anybody know anything about this concern or additives?

Don't put additive, waste of time. You can use biocides.

Thanks D. So now ...Duh! What's biocide? No wait; it's actually a nicely descriptive noun. I get it. Short of a lump of plutonium in the tank, however, what do people use and where to they get it?

doug, biocide kills organisms that live in wvo and diesel. you can get it at any auto supply store. check at your local independently owned shop first.

Since a couple of thousand liters will be around awhile biocide is a good idea. Harmful by products can form in the WVO, or even diesel, before you even know you have germs...( I know chemistry, but don't know if bacteria are technically germs. should be).

Big believer in adding acetone to stored WVO; as a stabilizer and for the solvent effect. On long trips where it was easy know my WVO mileage, I found that just 250 ml of acetone added to 200 liters gave me a small mileage improvement. Other longer term WVO mileage users, also believe that injectors stay cleaner longer and that carbon deposits are reduced.

This is new territory for me, but I'm inquiring about burning it in my Delica as an additive in a WVO-diesel mixture.

Acetone is everything acholol is not.

It's a strong solvent that won't readily attack rubber components, it is miscible with both water and oil so will blend some with entrenched water (it's in there) but unlike alcohol does not attract more water, will slightly lower the flash point of the WVO it's mixed with which will result in a cleaner burn, better vaporization as it also lowers the fuels surface tension, like any strong rated solvent has almost no biological activity, and regular use has been proven to reduce carbon build up. May even help decarbonize (not a word you get to use everyday!) the engine internals, but that seems like a big claim.

There are ways not to use it; never mix acetone with biodiesel, it will only increase the solvent effect of the alcohol. Read that alcohol and acetone together will produce no benefits. Too much will be a waste, for gas engine you only need a little bit. Though no affinity for rubber, acetone is nail polish and likes to ruin some painted surfaces. I have a petroleum chemical diploma from BCIT and a BCS in organic chemistry from UBC; both faculty taught us about the benefits of veggie oils, acetone, the evils of plant based alcohol fuels and a few other proven fuel ideas; all work but will never really change our dino fuel needs. For example though acetone benefits are real and proven, they are not significant enough to make a huge impact. Track your mileage and I think you will find a savings in fuel saved alone - not that much of an issue when you process your own fuel now is it.

Should add a good discussion I had with a Racor phone service representative. I had explained I settled, heated till water bubbled, filtered through particulate filters, finally adding my half cup of acetone, a tablespoon of biocide (per barrel), and than used a racor water removing diesel filter for final polishing when filling with WVO.

He indicated that marine agents sometimes use solvents, like acetone, to improve the life span and effectiveness of similar filter media. He seemed sure of this, thou I haven't read any reports indicating so.

In regards to adding acetone if you
Are mixing WVO and pump Diesel ?
I see little notations at the bottom of pumps
here "may/does contain up to 5% biodiesel"
To little to matter? What about B20?

In my opinion and what I've read, never use acetone with any biodiesel, how ever low the amount.

Myself only add 8-9 liters of waste rice bran oil to each 30 L (1000 baht) of biodiesel in my truck, I would never add acetone because I'm buying the much cheaper Biodiesel. Too be honest, with it being 42 celsius in the shade last week, think more WVO couldn't be added to the mix.
