Turbo Advice

Hi Guys,

Looking for your thoughts on my turbo. Last year I replaced my turbo with a new Garrett which lasted past the warranty, but has now got a bad oil seal, so is going to get rebuilt. The new turbo I put on is able to be liquid cooled, but was not as I have a '91 Delica. So I'm thinking this time around while it's apart I should set it up so it is water cooled to help give the turbo some extra life.

So here are my questions.
1. Any reason that I should not do this?
2. If I were to do this how should I configure the coolant lines?

Any other general thoughts or advice would be appreciated as well.

Thank you,

Robin

Hey Robin

You can swap out the head to the post 93 water cooled turbo's. Plug and play

Thanks jfarsang, if I had a head sitting around I might consider it, but not looking at spending more time or money. Do you know another reasonable way to route the coolant through the turbo without changing the head?

You can always tee off from the heater line like many diesels with aftermarket water-cooled turbo's.

Example. On the Nissan TD42, to turbo it with a water-cooled turbo, a Tee is fitted (#44) in the picture for the inlet and the outlet is piped down to an existing coolant plug (#50) on the block.

You can route a fresh water-cooled turbo in this fashion. Someone on the delica.ru site did it this way.

Which ever way you end up doing the routing, make sure the inlet/outlet on the turbo itself is bang on 90 degrees facing top to bottom. Oil or water, this is the best flow for the fluid.

Cheers

That's the kind so stuff I'm looking for! Thanks! How's your Russian? Do you know who did this mod on the ru site? Would like to see if they have any advice or pics. Thanks again.

My russian consists of a few not-so-nice words. I just came across it while surfing the forum last year.

Any advice on the specific points (source and return) to tie into the coolant system for cooling the turbo? Anyone?

Would be beneficial if you can look at a post-93 4D56T with the water cooled turbo and see where the return line is routed to. On your block, there should be a plug there.

For the feed line, tap into the feed heater line just like in the image above.

Anyone out there with a Post 1993 that can post a picture of the cooling lines for the turbo? Much appreciated!
