Hi there,
I'm looking for recommendations for shops in the Van/GRVD area with expertise in performance upgrades for my 2.5 in my L300...EGT Pyrometer, chips, etc...
cheers and thanks!
Simon

no chips
only performance worthwhile upgrades for the money:
Exhaust
What : 2.25 to 2.5" exhaust
Why : This will allow the engine to breath more = lower EGT (exhaust gas temperature) = more power
Where : Any capable exhaust shop ~ recommendations throughout the forum search 'exhaust'
IP tuning
What : injector clean/calibrate, injection pump calibration - fuel/air tuned
Why : This will maximize the fuel/air burn efficiency in the engine = more power
Where : Any capable diesel tuning shop ~ recommendations usually lead to CVI in Richmond. Experience trumps advertising.
Aux cooler
What : auto transmission auxiliary cooler
Why : lower the heat buildup in the transmission
Where : Transmission shops/custom performance shops
Maintenance
What : mechanical maintenance ~ preventative
Why : any mechanical engine/driveline part - dragging calipers / old oil in diffs/trans,etc.. will cause decrease in performance
Where : Any capable diesel shop ~ recommendations usually lead to CVI in Richmond. Experience trumps advertising.

That is a great simple and effective summary. Bing bang bong done. Should be a sticky at the top of the L300 tech section.

That is the level I performance mod
Level II is change the engine to something else or get an L400

I'd like to see you build a f/g top on an L400. You'd start a new standard of L400s.

Love too...just need more money to get a L400 not in the cards until I finish up this thesis and get a JOB!!!
I think with the grinder and welder I can fit a 4m40 into the hitop L300

Hmm I picture the title of your thesis to be along the lines of "Study of socio-ecconomic benefits of ghetto snorkels in emerging and brick markets, a comparative analysis".

Hey Simon, you might find this of interest: To Do list on newly acquired Delica
You'll find it in Delica Wiki, located at the bottom of Delica Canada Technical, in the board index.
There are a few shops that can do those sorts of upgrades for you. There are differing opinions regarding the installation of an EGT, from "paramount" to "adds a little ambiance" to the cockpit. Ultimately it depends on how you drive your Starwagon, as there is a difference between how one drives a diesel or a gasoline fuelled vehicle.
Falco.
P.S.: I have been driving my P25W (L300 Low Roof) for four years in many different applications (city; highway; forest service roads; off road) and have never needed a pyro, 'though I have been toying with the idea of a little more ambiance in the cockpit. The thing to remember is that Mitsubishi, whom I believe know a little about what they are doing, didn't feel it necessary to put an EGT into these vehicles to start with. That must be worth something?FC

I thought for the longest time that If I drove carefully that I didn't need a pyro until I overheated due to a clogged air filter and mud on the radiator. What I found when I installed mine is that of you lose concentration for even 5 seconds at highway speed and there's a headwind suddenly your pyro is showing 1400 degree's.

You may never see the symptoms of this heat increase (cracked heads etc) without the pyro but that doesn't mean it's not there and that it couldn't be a potential problem.

Simon. As mentioned above, CVI is good for the performance tuning/maintenance aspect. Muffler shops for the pyro bung to be welded in. I prefer pre-turbo at the exhaust manifold but an easy install is drill/weld post-turbo just after the exhaust flange on the pipe. You'll get a difference of 200F that you will need to account for when reading the gauge.
For the custom install inside the cab/dash,etc.. I recommend Jesse at Parkside Auto in Langley. 604-309-7718 His custom fab/skills are top notch but he likes taking his time.

Spill the beans. The man asked where !

An EGT gauge is a measuring instrument. Without it, unless you have a wifi EGT gauge in your head and a temp probe coming out of one of your orifices connected to the exhaust system, it's impossible to 'know' whether you need it or not.

The thing to remember is the amount of blown/cracked heads here in Canada in the past 6 years. A LOT. Hence, a pyro is added insurance to gauge what your engine is doing on the hot side. That's not ambiance. That's common sense. FYI, Mitsubishi factory EGT/pyro gauges are installed in Fuso's.
Why an EGT gauge is useful in diesel vehicles.
http://bankspower.com/techarticles/show ... -important
Diesel engines are not indestructible. Aside from running a diesel without oil, or filling the fuel tank with gasoline instead of diesel fuel,
few things will damage or kill a diesel engine faster than excessive exhaust gas temperature (EGT), yet strangely enough, no diesel pickups or motorhomes come equipped with a pyrometer as standard equipment to monitor EGT. During normal operation of such vehicles, EGTs usually stay within safe limits,
but situations can occur where the EGT gets too high, doing serious engine damage without any warning to the driver. A pyrometer that displays a diesel's EGT can warn the driver of dangerous conditions before such damage occurs.

Pyro - IS A MUST
yes you can drive for years without one....but, at anytime you might blow the motor by overheating the cylinder....
Sorry but a stock tuned L300 can blow the motor from extreme cylinder temperatures.....
Use mine more than any other guage.....
EDIT: you can also tell if you are too hot if piston comes out the exhaust pipe!!!

agree 100%.
Another good point that is brought up often when talking about small diesel engines is that there is a point when the delivery of fuel stops accelerating the van forward and instead does nothing but create heat. The egt tells you exactly when this happens. This is massive for fuel savings, as well as obviously avoiding high engine temps. I noticed a huge change in my mpg when I put on a egt and started paying attention to it.
Also remember that for the most part very little mechanical history comes with these vans and trucks from japan. Sure falco has not had any problems, but his entire engine may have been rebuilt the year before being shipped over.
For years on this forum it has been accepted that EGT guages should be standard, even more so now with the increase in cracked heads. It's amazing that there are still people who don't see the need! a bill for $3000 will change their minds eventually I guess!

My delica was post turbo, my Hilux is pre turbo in the manifold.
the biggest difference I notice is how fast the guage reacts. post turbo took a few seconds to catch the temps, pre turbo the needle moves almost with the pedal, it's really quite amazing how instant it is. Different engine, so the temps are different (hilux is about 150 cooler at all times, simmilar difference to the l300 vs l400 I think) but in my opinion the slightly trickier install pre turbo is worth it!

My pyro was tapped, not welded. I thought that was common practice!?

either or . depends on the bung
